Jai Lucas set to become next men’s basketball coach

The word going around down here is new staff will go after Boozers. Not sure how realistic it is though. A coach leaving a program for a new job midway thru the season is unheard of for me, particularly when it’s within the conference. I’d have to imagine part of the deal to let Lucas go now was that he wouldn’t wouldn’t take any prominent players with him. Just my take
Duke has no power in holding a coach hostage, it’s just not normal in basketball, but it’s normal in football

I bet it was Miami that forced the issue in wanting him to leave early from Duke

“Miami is expected to have high NIL for Lucas. Not sure the number yet, but Canes will be extremely competitive”
“I will say this. Several people I’ve talked to privately do not like the hire. They don’t because he does not have ties to the area and has never been a head coach before. I actually like the hire. Duke head coach Jon Scheyer gave Lucas the freedom to help coach the team and let his voice be heard. Scheyer and Calipari showed him the ropes. He will need a killer staff but I think Lucas succeeds in South Beach.”

Unfortunately, we don't play in South Beach...

Well, it's not really "midway through the season". The regular season is over. I understand your larger point, but I think it is "unheard of" because the Portal dates have only been as ****ed up as they are for the last few years.

Not sure what else UM and Jai Lucas can do when we need AT LEAST 10 new players and we have ZERO-POINT-ZERO high school signees left.

Gonna have to do some "unheard of" stuff sooner or later!

I think we get the Duke signee from Texas. And maaaaaybe the Boozers.

Duke will be fine.

We did. And it was an absolute necessity.

Blame the NCAA for opening the Portal during March Madness.

It's absolute madness.

I could care less about dook. All I’m saying is it’s unusual and might be unprecedented between ACC schools. There’s also a coach’s code. Don’t wanna leave the HC in a bad spot where you burn bridges

You must not follow UM baseball.
It’s not even UM basketball. UM basketball has been the sole bright spot for UM sports over the last 12 years.

Success is often pretty simple. I get that there was no Larranaga available this cycle… but there are plenty of mid major coaches who have demonstrated that they know how to run a team, win games, and make their program better.

Make that list, identify the features you prioritize to build your program (recruiting, X & O’s, leadership, organizational skills, fundraising, etc), and then pick from the guys on the list who fit the profile.

We just jumped on a 36 yr old hype train.

Could work. Should have money.

But maybe check with Rutgers to find out if it’s just about recruiting.

Go canes… with a sigh, because this was an enormous missed opportunity. Especially if they’re gonna throw money at basketball NIL.
