I'm not disagreeing at all.

I'm simply pointing out that if you START with a decent roster that has won 20 games the year before, and then you ADD IN the nearly-infinite Mormon money for NIL purposes, then you have a pretty good recipe for immediate success.

Miami is not in that same situation, currently.

BYU has turned it up a whole nother level in NIL with their new coach

They’ve given their coach a blank check to get who he can, that’s the main difference now

AT MOST we return 5 scholarship players. So there will be plenty of flipping of this roster.

The way we played in some of dem games, I wouldn't have any issues, if he only brought 1 player back....seriously.

Yes, from 1977 onward, Duke was a pretty successful program. And before 1974, Duke was pretty terrible.

So, yes, my statement about "the 1970s" was accurate. "The 1970s" was the last time that Duke was awful at recruiting. Not "the entirety of the 1970s". Just "the 1970s".

Google less. Know more. Not only were Duke's first three years under Bill Foster (basically) .500 years, but Duke was sub-.500 for the three years BEFORE Bill Foster arrived too.

So, yeah, Duke wasn't very good under Bucky Waters or Neill McGeachy.

Because athletic departments that want to spend spend on staffing first, they don’t cheap out on the most important hire, the HC. If Rad was serious about building a world class basketball program, he would be spending on a world class coach, not a complete unknown.

Again, you think McCollum wouldn’t be interested in the number was right? How about Sean Miller? There are far too many successful, experienced coaches out there for Miami to settle on Lucas, in FEBRUARY. This smells like a lazy, cheap hire, which considering the battles L and Meier fought over the years for funding, would make sense.

Sam was by far the best. Hocutt had a ton of potential, if he would have stayed, he would have been good. Dude has hit on some hires at TTU, a place where it isn’t easy to attract people. Other than that, Miami has had a collection of meh. Paul Dee was a good administrator, he wasn’t a dynamic leader that made good moves. He was a pencil pusher, nothing more.

Nobody is trying to make it seem like we are broke.

But you also can't make a general statement that "Goodman said that Miami is going to spend on NIL with Lucas" and act like that has solved everything.

Historically, we have not spent at the level of basketball bluebloods. And "trying to" may simply lead to other schools may spend more than they once did.

And speaking as an alum and booster, no school has unlimited funds (unless your boosters are into oil or religion as a business).

So, yeah, there's a big gap between "broke" and "unlimited funds", and that's where Miami has been for quite some time.

Jankovich was THE GOD of coaching hires, particularly in football.

Paul Dee made some good hires. Jim Morris and Butch Davis and Katie Meier. And Coker was NOT the worst hire ever, I wish we would have given him more resources later (not just money, but solid coordinators, Coker couldn't identify a good coordinator to save his life).

The misses include Perry Clark and Frank Haith, as well as Randy Shannon. I do think Shalala's focus on hiring "up-and-comers" kinda put the shackles on Dee when hiring Haith/Shannon, but I believe that Perry Clark was recommended by Leonard Hamilton on his way out the door, so Dee has to take part of the hit on Perry.

I may be overlooking some good hires in non-revenue sports, but these tend to be lower-profile hires.

Duke was excellent in the 1960s, when I was at UM.

Duke went 50-6 in ACC regular-season competition in a four-year span from 1962-'63 through 1965-'66, winning three ACC Tournaments in that span. All four of these teams accomplished things no Duke team had previously accomplished. Duke made its first Final Four in 1963.

And, as was pointed out by Scheyer, the TIMING is stupid as well.

Even if Lucas is the second coming of Jesus Christ Himself, we are hiring a guy from a team that is likely to be playing on the last day of the post-season, which kinda-sorta ***** up the "we need 10-15 guys from the Portal" strategery.

If you hire an established head coach near the conclusion of his season, maybe some Portal guys wait-and-see. But will they do that for first-time head coach who won't start until April?

We shall see. I want the hire to succeed. But there are serious concerns. And this is not about "well, I just don't like Coach X". **** all that. I root for the University of Miami, first and foremost, over everything else.

I respect all this Duke knowledge, but does it change my correct and accurate point that the last time Duke struggled to recruit was...the 1970s?
