It's Time To Move On

With all due respect to you, Shalala hired Shannon because he was a bargain at a time when UM needed a bargain. We were paying off the salaries of Coker, Clark, and Labati, and we needed someone who would do the HC job for peanuts.

As for a "previous leadership position"...you seem to forget that there were plenty of other big-name programs hiring coordinators to the HC position around this time. Bellotti at Oregon had been their OC before taking over the HC job and making the Ducks a household name; then he passed off the reigns to his own OC Chip Kelly, and we all know that went pretty well. Clemson hired Dabo as HC, and he'd been WR coach. FSU hired Jimbo right around this same time to sit with his thumb up his *** and watch Bobby for a couple years.

That Shannon was a minority and had a dramatic back story was nice, but I can guaran-****-tee you that it wasn't the main reason for his hire. You're putting your beliefs about Shalala's politics ahead of all logic if you believe that she'd make the hire just to have a minority coach.

Not to mention that Shannon was a Miami Guy with NFL coaching experience who had led top College defenses prior to his being hired. He had also been named Top assistant in the country a few years prior. In hindsight it was a bad hire, but at the time, It warranted a raised brow at most. He had enough of a resume to warrant the move, especially as a Cane alum who consistently fielded top10 defenses All Head coaches were assistants at some point, and then got their opportunity to lead. Lets not act like Randy Shannon was some purely affirmative action higher.

Miami lost its self respect by hiring assistants with no previous HC experience. It was a bigger program...in fact THE program ...and it deserved Sam Jankovich type hires...coaches with track records and exprience in running a big show program.

Right. Tell me again how many coaches you've hired in your illustrious career?

Neither Bob Stoops nor Mark Richt had experience at the HC level before their current jobs. Both OU and UGA are storied programs with big-money boosters and athletic departments that dwarf UM's.

Mike Shula had no HC experience before he was hired at Bama, perhaps the most celebrated and richest football program in the US.

Look at jeremy Foley at UF. That guy is pretty much thought of as one of the top ADs in the business. Even he hired Zook and now Muschamp.

Bad hires happen to even the best leaders and programs.

Shannon was a bad hire. It happens. It wasn't some liberal plot by Shalala and company.

Hiring the assistant of the HC in a failed regime is not the move of a head administrator with her head on straight.

Donnas demeanor said it all the day Shannon was hired, you can spin it any way you wish.

I'm not spinning it. You are.

I'm looking at it from the prospective of a hiring manager. You're looking at it form the prospective of someone who apparently dislikes Donna.

Hiring a DC who had his D's in the top 20 every year is a move any head administrator would make, regardless of the "failures" or the previous HC. Unfortunately, you want to pretend that his color mattered more to Donna than his resume. So you basically think Shalala's an idiot who only cares about her political agenda above all else, even at the expense of the athletic dept. Which makes no sense whatsoever, given her past and present hires.

Oh, btw....here's a list of current HCs who were assistants under "failed regimes" at their current schools:

Dabo Swinney
Mike Gundy
Bill O'Brien
Pat Fitzgerald
Bronco Mendenhall

I remember when they hired Chuck Neinas as a consultant and he recommended Randy Shannon. Neinas was very highly respected at the time, but after a couple of bad suggestions, Neinas is rarely heard from nowadays.
Fanbase is still in denial about the decade of destruction of a once Cadillac program.

Golden is rebuilding and retooling. The price of imcompetant hires by an indifferent administration and a scandal have taken their toll and will not be repaired in less than 5 years.

Agree with all except the bolded.

Bad hires happen to even the most forward-thinking leaders and organizations. I don't think Shalala et al just suddenly woke up one day and said "y'know, I really should start caring more about the football team; think I'll hire Al Golden." IMO, she and the rest of the admin have cared about the success of the football team all along; they've just received and taken some bad advice and made a couple bad decisions based on that advice.

In general, Donnas done a great job at the helm, I have no animosity towards here whatsoever. I am critical of her hire of Shannon, as she did it for all the wrong reasons.

Good to know that you were in on the interview and selection process, and that you're such an insider that you know Donna's reasoning. I look forward to more of your keen insights.
