Is it possible that Al Golden is our version of Ron Zook?

I have been big on Al and will always be thankful for how he stuck with the U through NCAA crap, and how he has represented with class.

I have been and continue to be impressed with how he recruited under that cloud, and how this class is shaping up.

I gave the benefit of the doubt to him and coach D about talent, including having realistic expectations this year. I still thought prior to even the results of the last two games that we were a year or two away.

But what I saw today, and now in retrospect this year even in wins, has made me really question the coaching ability for the first time in a significant way even despite the points above on talent. .

You just can't lose this way. Fine if we lose due to lack of talent, but not because of dumb mistakes not based on talent.
The coaching talent.... Well is it as suspect as the player talent once was now that the gap in talent is not as bad as it oncewas? The pendulum should be shifting and in some ways it's not.

It just feels today, for the first time for me, that I'm not as sure anymore, despite a likely great recruiting class.

I'm not sure either way. I'm not a true expert. But I watch a ton of football and this isn't passing the eye test.

Is al, as much as I love him, a CEO, a great recruiter, but not the coach we need to return? Is he that blinded by loyalties? Maybe just frustrated, but discuss...

Is he our zook?

Two of the biggest mistakes made tonight were made by true freshmen on the return game after they had made huge returns. Unfortunately they haven't been here before. Their learning curve will be huge after tonight. I don't expect Burns and Coley to make the same mistake again...ever. O'Donnell, that was a little different. Either way, those turnovers were huge. Nothing the coaches or anyone else (other than the ball carrier) could do about it.

Valid enough, but explain the second half, the crossing routes going undefended over and over?

the mistakes hurt us but who the **** allowed em to run for like 500000000 yards after the catch. we couldn't a single stop in that second half when we really needed.

Yes. He is our Zook. The question is, who is going to be our Urban.
Golden is not turning around anything. He is a players coach and a great guy but he is in over his head. Just learn to embrace 9-3 seasons. All style and no substance won't get you a title. Lower expectations and I promise that each one of you will live longer. The old version of the U died in 2005. Time to let go(cue the bag pipes).

Yes very possible. If the team hasn't improved after 3 years you've got a head coaching problem. I'm not saying to fire him, but everyone's eyes need to open to the fact that he may not be the guy to get us where we want to go.

Maybe, but remember Butch was a horrible game day coach also......
But seriously, I'm a lil shook that he might be fools gold right now.
We will learn a lot the rest of the way, we can still rebound here and finish strong.

Have we not improved? FSU, no way we were honestly going to win that game. This game, yes, we made a lot of mistakes and the D did not stop anything on 3rd down. But to say we haven't improved after 3 years is a bit of a stretch.

So the last four games have looked like improvement to you? Did you see what happened to wake today? What is UNCs record? We allowed 500 yards to a 100th ranked offense. Sure we improved ranking wise but in actuality when you watch this team we haven't improved.

stat guys in here need to put together a revised ranking w just ACC opponents. were terrible on D really when u see the stats. usf, fau, and ssu skew the numbers

No. Another poster said it but zook recruits very very well. Even at Illinois he brought in serious talent fr that type of school. Muschamp would be more like a zook.

Golden seems to be recruiting pretty **** well this year so not sure if I'm following the distinction
