Gordinier (6-4, 235) redshirted last season as he worked with the scout team and second team at middle linebacker.
Now with a new UM coaching staff, Gordinier has started spring football as the starting middle linebacker. Gordinier is currently ahead of Mike Smith, Terry McCray, and Shaquille Quarterman on the middle linebacker depth chart.
“I really worked hard in the offseason,” Gordinier said. “This new strength staff has done a great job of helping us get stronger and improve our conditioning. There is a lot of competition at MIKE right now, but I am running with the first team.”
“I love the scheme,” Gordinier said.” Everybody is out here working hard and playing fast and having fun again. Right now the defense is simpler because we are just getting started and we are learning the basics of the defense. For now though, it seems simpler.”
Gordinier says the defense is also working to improve the effort they play with as well.
“A lot of people think the change is all about the scheme and how we are going to be running a 4-3 now, but really we are focused on fixing two things. We want to get better at running to the ball and tackling,” Gordinier said.
Gordinier says the culture has changed at Miami this offseason with a new coaching staff.
“I would say right now everybody is having fun and there is a lot more energy,” Gordinier said. “That is something that I like seeing. It comes from the whole coaching staff and all the work we put in during the offseason.”
Gordinier used his redshirt season to improve his preparation process and gain a better understanding of what it will take to succeed on the college level.
Now that hard work is paying off.
“The main thing I learned was how to read the offense,” Gordinier said. “I also had to learn how to watch a lot of film. Preparing is a big thing at this level, so when I get on the field I will not be confused and I will know exactly what is coming my way.”

Sophomore Sheldrick Redwine, who had 14 tackles in 12 games last season, is the early favorite to win the job, but will need to have a strong spring to solidify that spot.
“It’s really exciting (to battle for a starting spot), but it’s competition every day,” Redwine said. “All of us DBs are good so it’s big competition. It’s not a competition to start—we just all push each other to get better. Everybody takes reps and gets better.”
Ryan Mayes, Michael Jackson, and Terrance Henley are also competing for a starting role with Redwine.
The defense under coordinator Manny Diaz has changed to an attacking 4-3 defense that highlights speed and instinctive playmaking ability, which many players have praised.
Redwine likes the new defense and believes it will give everyone more chances to make plays as opposed to being in last year’s read-and-react gap responsibility-type defense.
“We’re playing way faster,” Redwine said. “He’s got us reading the quarterback more and we’re basically playing off of instincts. Our DBs are real instinctive so how they have us playing fits us perfectly with how we’re used to playing.”
The change in philosophy is exciting for cornerbacks.
“At corner it’s the perfect scheme because we all love jumping stuff,” Redwine said. “They are putting us in position to make plays more than we were last year. I feel like it’s going to translate well.”
The team has completed two practices thus far with the third on Saturday morning.
“Everybody is having more fun,” Redwine said. “The biggest thing I see is that everybody is really buying into the system. That’s probably one of the biggest differences. Everybody is really trusting what the coaches are saying and we’re really going with it and actually feel good with what they’re telling us, the techniques, and how we’re doing it.”

Miami is trending with Cade Weldon. Don't feel like posting the whole article...
Highlights:
"Back when I was healthy last spring, Miami was my top school," Weldon said. "As soon as Coach Richt came over, it became a huge point for me to make it down there. Especially with Jon (Richt) as the quarterbacks coach, I wanted to make sure I met everybody. I can tell they're going to get it going again."
Weldon's father, Casey, played quarterback at Florida State and finished second in the 1991 Heisman Trophy voting. Mark Richt happened to be his position coach in Tallahassee so the family connection dates back well before Cade was even born.
"I knew them as a young kid so it's been cool to make that jump from being family friends to actually getting recruited," Weldon said. "That relationship with them could end up being huge. They were on me at Georgia but having that offer at Miami is a great feeling."
WR (Recruiting):
Wide receiver Brieon Fuller (Hialeah, Fla./Champagnat Catholic) picked up an offer from Miami, per his big high school coach Dennis Marroquin.
Georgia, Kentucky and West Virginia have also offered.
Miami assistants Thomas Brown and Ron Dugans made the verbal offer.
Miami and Georgia are tied on top early on for the 2019 wide receiver, one of the best in south Florida in his class.
DE (Recruiting):
Miami visiting Tyree Johnson in Washington D.C.
Johnson (6-3, 244) sixteen BCS, had 43 tackles, 21 for loss, and 10 sacks in the fall despite missing three games. He lined up all over the field but he's narrowing his focus on where he'll be at the next level. "I have no leaders, every school has a shot with me and I'm taking things one step at a time," Johnson said. "I got to get more visits in and I have three coming up for sure. Rutgers is April 2nd, Texas A&M is April 9th, and Tennessee is April 16th. I think I'll get to Miami over the summer but I'm working on that one."
The Hurricanes are Johnson's newest scholarship, which arrived on Thursday. He reviewed how the situation materialized and what impact it might have on his mindset.
"A whole bunch of the Miami coaches followed me on Twitter yesterday and we talked a little bit," Johnson said. "They told me to call today and they let me know about the offer when I did. They were a dream school since I was a little kid so I really wanted that one. Getting it had me speechless basically."
Johnson is more aware of what used to be in Coral Gables but he hopes he can take certain steps so he'll be more familiar with what's there in the present.
"They had a whole bunch of draft picks, especially Sean Taylor, and that makes it seem like a great program," Johnson said. "Mark Richt is the new head coach down there now but that's all I know about them at the moment. I'm trying to get on that visit so I can learn more in the future."
