I'll be that guy....

how do you know how these guys are going to look on the collegiate field?!!?!??!?!

WAIT AND SEE

Thats very true.. who woulda thought k.dorsey would have been leading our NC team... To the OP post about UT who at texas thought that of all their qb's that little colt woulda taken the reigns and lead them to almost another title.. truth of the matter is you let the kids come in learn the system and you see who can plain get it done out there.

I'm fine with what we did QB wise. We weren't in play for anyone elite so we collected some arms and now hope one sticks. I may be in the minority but I think Morris/Williams are fine in the short term. I don't see the QB situation to be as dire as most do.

I actually think we have a sneaky good DT class. I absolutely love Briscoe and think he will be a monster here as long as he doesnt get on the Marcus Forston two bags of chips per day diet. Ivery is a space eater who can move, I liked his tape also. No one talks about Moore but I like him as well. Hamilton/McCord/O'Donnel/Hoillet as Ends is a pretty solid class on paper but I see your point. McCord and Hoillet are tiny and I have a hard time seeing them playing with a hand down in the near future. Still though I'm not panicking about our D-Line situation.

I think the biggest hole that was not addressed by this class was actually at LB. I really would have liked to have Northrup in this class. Kirby can play right away I think, and Perryman should be a good starter this year, and Cookie is solid, but we really have no one else, and the other LBs we took seem too much in the mold of the gionni pauls of the world in that they are undersized projects who will need time to develop. Hopefully I'm wrong but I see serious problems with LB depth next year. I would really rather not have to rely on guys like Gaines and Cain.

That being said, it was a great effort by this staff. Pulling off a top 10 class in our current situation was extremely impressive. And we did a great job with our biggest hole which was at corner.

Great points. My main hope is watching Alabama this year. They basically were dominant with a Dline and QB much like was just described. They had no real difference makers on the dline and an average QB. Hopefully our LBs and DBs can get to that level. Have to feel good about having some shut down Corners finally. Actually think Morris is alot more talented than McCarron.

First off, I think our coaching staff just closed on one of the most impressive recruiting efforts I've ever seen in 15+ years of following recruiting very closely. To do what they did after a 6-6 season, with sanctions looming and negative recruiting at an all-time high is almost unbelievable, and it wouldn't surprise me if they got some 'recruiter of the year' type awards, as they would be WELL deserved.

But, I have to be honest, I still see two holes that I'm skeptical about having been filled. Here they are:

1. Quarterback - I'm still unconvinced that we've got a QB on our roster who can take us where we need to be, and unless Thompson, by some miracle, comes and focuses on QB, I'm skeptical we changed that this year. Hopefully Olsen is that guy, but if so, we're still 3 years away (minimum) from having him take significant snaps for us.

2. Impact DL - I love Chickillo. He is a championship caliber player on your roster, there is zero doubt, and he is a foundational type player. That said, he's not the kind of guy that's going to take over a ball game, I don't think. And, I'm not sure that I see any DL of that caliber in our last 2 classes (or more, to be honest). I see Hamilton being Chickillo-esque in that he's going to be a rock solid guy for us, and I like Ivory & Briscoe's potential to some degree, but I don't see this group the last two years becoming a dominant force. I could be wrong, and I'm open ears if one of you can convince me otherwise. McCord is a kid whose athleticism I love, but he's made to stand up and rush the QB, I believe... not sure I see him being a 4-3 DE (but I could be wrong)... his future's going to lie in the hands of Coach D. Hoilett and O'Donnell could be studs or they could never play a down... Ricardo Williams' alleged struggles might me tampering my optimism on them as they're similar type players (somewhat, anyway).

It's unrealistic for Golden to come in with 1 recruiting class and another that he got to spend 3 weeks on and expect our roster holes to be filled. I'm not criticizing him or the staff at all. I just see these 2 spots as being lingering things that are going to potentially keep us from reaching, or at least hindering our efforts to get back to where we need to be.

Thoughts?

why do we compare white players to white players???

if anything, i see chick like cliff avril or jeremy mincey

I absolutely think Dewey is capable of leading us where we need to go. Maybe not this season, but with some development he can be a smart QB who reads a defense and distributes the ball to playmakers. That's what Ken Dorsey was. He wasn't a physical specimen or anything like that. I'm over going ofter those super QB's like Kyle Wright. I just want someone who will work non stop studying in his off time like Dorsey did. I think Dewey can be that guy.

I know I'm in the vast vast minority here but I think Morris can be a top of the line guy for us. All-Conference type.

Also, if the last few years proved anything, you don't need an elite QB to win. Now we don't have the D of LSU, Alabama but we will improve over there. I think Jacory played well enough for us to win 9 games last year (outside BC) if the D would have been better.

I think one of Dewey, Crow, Thompson will be good enough for us to win. I think Fisch is a very good QB coach.

Both fellas are white...both are roughly the same size, well built...both are more athletic than their SPARQ numbers would show...Relentless off the snap...no real weakness to the game, just overall solid player, all hustle and technique going after the QB and holding their own against the run.

A guy like Avril is a bit smaller, and just has a different game to him. More athletic, too. Mincey...well, I don't even like Mincey, so I wouldn't compare him to anybody.

I watched Dewey's senior film, or about 2 minutes of it, and I saw a guy with a pretty good arm, who thows a tight spiral, and with good accuracy. His mechanics were not terrible, though he needs to work on weight transfer. Seems to have a pretty fast release too. Am I nuts? I think he has QB1 potential.

Also, to the more general theme, I don't understand people who say we shouldn't discuss this and rather we should wait and let it play out. That's fine logic, but then I expect those same people not to be amped up about the 4- and 5-star kids, right? You can't jump up and down like a ****** handed some cotton candy over some prospects, and then ignore any potential deficiencies for others based on the idea of "waiting and seeing."

Regardless, I don't think this was a perfect class, but given our circumstance, this is a stand-up recruiting job by Golden, who gets an A-plus from me.

DL is the bigger issue.

You dont need a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady to win in college-neither of them won **** in college. *Look at the teams that played in the title game this year-their QBS are not the top of the top. *You don't need a Matt Barkley if the rest of the team is on point.

Map, I agree with you about Preston. Smart, moves well, knows where to throw the ball, this kid can lead us and not lose games.

I've often compared Chickillo to Rusty Medaris...if he's that kind of player, than he's the type that can take over a ball game. Problem we have, no standout defensive tackle. Bodies, yes. Nothing to write home about though. Get a good DT and it'll open up the rest of the defense.

Dewey was an Elite 11 QB and selected to the Army All-American game. He was coached by by Detmer and is now going to be coached by Fisch. Supposed film junkie, too! QB should not be a concern, imo.

I agree with some folks that are LB situation could have used another body, but next year, there are a lot of really good top tiered prospects. Give me Deeb!
