Maybe I spoke too soon on South Florida declining. Brown, Smith, Shavers, Lucas. You could easily throw OJ Frederique in there, too,
4 of them low end 3 stars, until Lucas earned his 4th star very late, and a can't miss 5 star.

Brown - 546 ranked player overall
Shavers - 614 ranked player overall
Lucas - 331 ranked player overall
OJ - 735 ranked player overall

Bigger concern over the south florida decline is that our staff didn't recruit Isaac Brown, had Shavers committed and dropped him, let Wisconsin come down here and get Lucas committed and while they did want him and recruit him - they were late. Got OJ luckily so credit to them for that.

Can't go 1/4 when you could have easily been 4/4. At worst, when these players are in your back yard you have to hit .500. I'd love to have Brown or Lucas the next 2 years. Shavers, admittedly it seems I was wrong on him as well. Can never have enough instinctual linebackers and we let him walk.

Visited Ohio State the week before signing day last year. I’m sure a lot will try but he seems sold on being a hometown kid.
The loyalty to state schools from small town kids in the Midwest can be wild. 9 out of the top 10 recruits in Iowa this class are going either Iowa or Iowa St. On the other hand, only 1 out of the top 10 in Indiana is committed to IU. I'd expect them to have some major flips near signing day.

I think Shavers was a case of being too worried about "measurables" for LB recruits vs guys with the instincts to play the position. The latter is far more important - a 210 LB can thrive at the college level if he is good at diagnosing the play (what some call instincts). OTOH a 230 LB who is poor at diagnosing is going to be a lousy LB.

This was exactly Manny's problem with LB recruiting. He got converted DEs that didn't have the vision/diagnostic ability to play LB.

We also landed Adarius Hayes and Bobby Pruitt who both look really good

Shavers is playing great and that’s awesome, but I don’t think he would be playing much here if at all just given our depth

Shavers is the least of my worries, for the record. I don't know enough about Nebraska but I felt they have recruited well enough under Rhule that he's playing over someone decent if he's on the field. Maybe I'm wrong.

On a positive note - we actively recruited 7 out of the 10 and offered 8 of 10 on this list. Strong evaluations and prioritizing a lot of the right guys.
Lagway - up for debate but probably finished 2nd or 3rd
Brown - Didn't recruit at all. No official offer.
Smith - Nearly won on signing day. Finished 2nd
Lofton - Signed
Seaton - Recruited but didn't make much progress. Not in top 7.
Simmons - Top of the board guy. Finished 2nd or 3rd. Hard to take a Duncanville kid from UT
Jackson - Recruited heavily. Finished 2nd. Sort of got played
Shavers - Was committed forever and got dropped due to Senior tape eval.
Lucas - Recruited hard down the stretch. Looked like we were flipping him and he ended up sticking, a surprise to most
Perich - Did not recruit to my knowledge

Only negative is that we finished 2nd a lot. Another positive is we landed a lot of guys that might be better than the ones on the list that we missed that just haven't got on the field here yet. Scott is better than Jackson, Hayes is better than Shavers, OJ is as good or better than Lucas, etc. Lyle could end up better than Brown in the long run. Judd is obviously better than Lagway (jk).
