- Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna four-star Miami cornerback commit Chris Ewald Jr.’s stats through the first half of the season may look modest, but they don’t tell the full story of the On300 player’s production so far in his senior season.
- The No. 205 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking and No. 27 cornerback only has eight pass deflections and 21 tackles thus far in his senior year and is yet to record an interception, but the Hurricane pledge has still made his presence felt, according to Chaminade-Madonna head coach Dameon Jones. Ewald has been a lockdown cornerback who hasn’t been tested by opponents nearly as much as one may expect, and his ability to recognize formations and offensive tendencies has made him a dangerous defensive back opposing offenses have been eager to avoid.
- “He’s such a smart kid at his age, you know?” Jones said. “But he doesn’t get tried often, and I don’t know if it’s because he’s a Miami commit or whatever, but they don’t go his way a lot.”
- “I think so,” Jones said. “It’s just hard sometimes because as a DB, you kind of see the numbers of interceptions and stuff like that, but when you’re not getting tested often and your alignment and assignment is on point because you’re that coach on the field, it’s tough.”
- Jones said Ewald’s lack of stats so far this year haven’t affected his confidence because of his ability to hold his own against elite receivers in Chaminade’s practices. Ewald regularly competed against 2024 No. 1 overall prospect and current Ohio State freshman Jeremiah Smith and 2024 top-100 prospect and current Miami freshman Joshisa Trader last season and has been tested against 2025 three-star Penn State commit Koby Howard this year, so neither Jones or Ewald question his abilities.
