Herbert doesn't impress

At least Herbert has athletic ability.

You wanna see something scary? Watch the Zach Dykstra 1 on 1 clips starting at the 3:52 mark.

I'm suprised Dykstra has an offer. Dude is falling all over himself, looks clumsy and has no strength.

Zalonte Hillery looks good. Needs to get in weightroom but has the frame and footwork to be good.

Donaldson is a nasty monster and a day one starter. He is better than Leatherwood. Once Donaldson gets his hands on the defender its over. WOW.

Dykstra looked lost out there. Worried about him

Take them all and let time sort them out. OL recruiting is one of those things you have to keep throwing numbers at it and see who pans out.

I automatically assume you don't know football if you are evaluating an oline man without pads on in 1 on 1s. The advantage goes to the defensive lineman every time in that drill. It's not real football. Now in pads that's a different story
It's pointless if you're evaluating the outcomes of 1 on 1s. It's partly of value to get a glimpse of technique, kick, agility, some footwork, anchor, etc. It's just a glimpse.

You look at a guy like Hainsey and know he's been very well coached. Now you factor in how much more he'll grow, how he'll win battles, etc. Look at a guy like Donaldson and he looks like an immediate contributor at something like RT. Whether or not he'll be able to maintain an edge rusher at the college level remains to be seen.

Also Navaughn Donaldson at the 7:20 mark. What an animal. Absolute 5 star.

yeah but did you see him get pancaked by wilson?

Your definition of a pancake and mine are completely different. Donaldson lost leverage but wasn't pancaked.... Having said that, Wilson is a beast. Arguably the top player in the country. When Kool was making visits to Texas, he should've been hitting up Wilson.

Yeah the main thing to take away from it is can an oline man bend, footwork, hand placement and technique

I also don't anything about oline play, but it seems to be that he was beaten only once by the inside move. The other times, he stayed in front of his man but got push back. That just means he needs to get stronger.

He needs to learn how to use his hands.

Clearly very athletic, but the DL was into his chest on every snap.

I'm with y'all on Dykstra, but I hope to God he's a real Cane and shuts us all up when he gets here.

There are folks (I think Pete might be one) who believe that Herbert and Slaton are day 1 contributors. After watching some film on Herbert, I dunno. I know you can only take so much from this type of drill, but you can take something. What I took is that his technique is awful and he has a ways to go. That said, he has a great frame and is a great athlete but needs some work.

That's why coaches use real game film and scouting to evaluate prospects and then invite them on campus for camps to see their skill set. Most OLinemen will get beat occasionally by smaller speed guys or on certain moves, but if a guy had good foot work you know you can teach the other stuff and increase the strength/size.

Sure he did (see below from the chat transcript and he's mentioned it elsewhere)...

But again, Herbert and Slaton are capable of contributing right away at the weakest spot on the team.

To me, Herb is a Guard...

Idk if he's coming or not, but I do know he's not a typical Michigan Tackle, so if he's being pitched as a LT/RT then I guess that's just the selling point.

Slaton I think could play right away as a G, but imo Herbert needs a Shirt year, whether he's playing G or T.

Good athlete & I want him in this class, but if he's asked to start day 1, he'll struggle quite a bit imo.

And my assessment isn't based on drills, it's based on actual games this season.

Yeah, I agree with you guys as well. I've never been high on Herbert or Dykstra. Herbert is undersized and lacks strength. Dykstra has size but lacks athleticism and it seems like he might have trouble with speed rushers. Love Donaldson and Slaton. I also see tremendous upside with Hillery as well.
