Not sure why there is general dislike for his abilities as a running back. Kid was pretty **** good for a true frosh. Got good yards when he touched the ball. Don't know what his stats were but I'm assuming he had roughly 5 yards per carry. Seems like a tough runner too.

By no means is he a superstar but the kid is a good back.

because he missed so much training last year, having spring without Duke and yearby is probably a blessing. Allows him to get a ton of carries. We shall see next year.

I was high on him early, but as the season went on, I became unimpressed with him.

A few problems I see with him:

- He doesn't have natural instincts as a runner
- He isn't explosive
- He runs tentatively
- He doesn't finish plays by gaining those extra yards
- He goes down way too easily for a kid of his size
- He doesn't run behind his pads

I'm sad to say, my official stance on Gus is that he'll never be a great player for us.

This board is tough. Bashing a true freshman who ran for 5.5 per carry is just part of what they do. This kind of bashing of players is relatively new. Miami has a lot of fans that identify with the team just as they would a pro team. The ugliness comes out when they don't win. If Gus had the same year for the 2000 team, the board would have him penciled in as a first rounder.

I think it is too early to make the judgment, although opinion respected nonetheless. I think he possess a great skill of patience and do see him finishing runs not as you do. I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised with Gus.

We don't need him to be a superstar, if he progress some of the points will go away. Lots of time tentativeness comes from uncertainty. I would like to see how he does this coming season with a big spring coming up.

I saw the exact same things and agree 100% with the first part.

But if.

IF.

He can get coached up to tweak some things, he could at least solidify duke Johnson's spell back. He has the potential to be very good IMO.

Gus came in as the #1 fullback in the country last year. We'll use him the right way this year and I think he's gonna be a beast.

He did average 5.5 ypc but that came against our weakest comp... ACC play came around and dude disappeared even after Duke's injury

It's too early, the kid has talent. He does run very high and is a large target. He might be better suited for fullback with the occasional relief at tailback. Problem is, he needs a very clear lane and it seems a fullback in front of him for the seal. He's be a great change of pace for Duke and Yearby, but do his skills measure up? We all hope...

Again, he was a true freshman!! Lighten up Francis....

Who's Francis? Besides that... let me elaborate if that was intended for me:

I saw a few flashes from what I saw that he could be a decent back for us. What has me concerned is we only have ONE legit back on our roster right now and he's out for the spring. And while Gus did flash signs that he too could be legit, it was only against our lowest level of comp during the weakest schedule I have seen our team play in maybe 15 years. He did almost nothing after Savannah State... Not saying he is a scrub or that he can't improve, but I do have concerns that he will not be the solution next year.

Why do people have a problem with him?

1. Not enough stars for our star ***** fanbase
2. He's from New York, which goes against the bias of our Florida-centric whorish fanbase

3. That he didn't run over everyone as an 18 year old Freshman who missed UTough.

4. People on this board were comparing him to Eddie George coming in... He ain't no Eddie. To me, his hs highlights were okay, his fr year was okay, I just think he's kinda sorta average.

Looked good to me. Heres the good I saw

-as has been said, very patient runner.
-great feet at his size
-I was impressed by his vision at times
-impressive speed for his size IMO

the negatives

-played a little smaller than he looks
-didn't appear to push the pile, again, relative to his size

overall, I'm not sure where the doubt comes from. Remember, he came into camp late as well. What I saw was a kid who ran unsure of himself, and really really didn't want to fumble (which i don't believe he did). A redshirt would have suited him well. He's the kind of kid who stays around 230, but a much more solid 230 after some training, and if they can wake the beast, this is the one guy I think can make a lot of you fools look pretty stupid if we were to revisit these threads 24 months from now. Kids got a lot of Rashard Mendenhall in him if you ask me. Not quite the same jets but closer than you'd think, he's a long strider.
