Not getting this post at all. Plenty of very good coaches come from smaller schools or bouncing around a while.

Sometimes they have to bounce around because they don’t have key political connections.

But how many do it for 25+ yrs with ZERO power 5 experience?

OP omitted that his Defense at Marshall in 2022 finished in the Top 10 in 12 different categories. He struck when the iron was hot and it's hard to fault. However, it's become evident that his approach is not working here and we have regressed from 2023 to 2024 while upgrading the talent.

Except we haven’t upgraded the defensive talent…massive downgrade in quality defensive players this year compared to last.

Those UVA defenses under Al Groh weren’t anything special.

Never said they were special. Just that they were not terrible.

Just like Al is running Marcus Freeman’s defense at Notre Dame, D’Onofrio was just running Al’s defense here. The defense Golden ran at UVA was Al Groh’s and it was the same scheme they ran Temple and Miami. I always laugh when people say “if Golden would have just hired a DC, he could have won here. He never brought in a DC because they were running HIS defense.

I get your point but that still seems way over simplified. As if Golden would become head coach at let's say UNC and revert back to his Temple/Donofrio defense. I just don't buy that. The man has learned a few things since his firing from Miami. Don't you think he would implement that knowledge?

I was giving examples of Golden being a terrible DC.

I’m sure he’s picked up some new tricks along the way but he wouldn’t be the first coach who decided he had to prove “his way” could work. Especially if he was fully in charge of the defense.
