Bounced around 30 seasons at the high school, FCS and G5 levels.

What possibly made Mario think this is the guy I need to run my defense?

Was there some kind of recommendation from Coach O for one of his buddies from Louisiana?

A lot of good coaches come from lower levels. I wouldn't necessarily indict him over that.

IIRC he was considered an up-and-comer. He was the DC when Marshall upset Notre Dame in South Bend.

It's difficult to know who will work out.

Mario's first defensive staff was good on paper. Kevin Steele, Charlie Strong, Addae, etc...

Not getting this post at all. Plenty of very good coaches come from smaller schools or bouncing around a while.

Sometimes they have to bounce around because they don’t have key political connections.

Otherwise in the two seasons prior to here at Marshall in 2023 they were top 5 in the country in:

Third down defense (first), stop rate (second), pass efficiency defense (third), defensive efficiency (third), yards per play (third), turnovers gained (fifth) and rushing defense (fifth).

2022:

Sixth in scoring defense (16.0) and passes intercepted (18), eighth in total defense (294.5), ninth in first down defense (200), 12th in defensive touchdowns (3), 16th in team sacks (2.92), 19th in red zone defense (76.7) and 22nd tackles for loss (6.9) and fumbles recovered (11).

So for two prior seasons as a dc, at an aggregate national level, he already had a ton of good reasons for Mario being interested. Power 4 school or not.

in fairness, he was respected but had a drinking problem that held him back. I think he had two dui's years ago and no one gave him a shot.

hes a g5 DC not a p4 DC

when a guy is a defensive coach that long and even a DC, but never makes it to the P4 level, there are red flags..

I remember those questions coming up and they were excused away with some legal troubles as the reason he never made it to the P4 level...
then I remember we were all worried LSU would "steal him" from us last year....

I don’t have an issue with hiring someone who hasn’t been at top schools. Half the coordinators at big time programs are retreads who were terrible somewhere else before. I mean Al Golden is considered one of the top D coordinators in the country right now.

Al G is a product of his HCs defense. if hes dumb enough to leave ND for another DC job, **** get exposed again

That’s what I’m saying. Just because a guy had success at a major program doesn’t mean he’s necessarily a great coach. I’d never hire Golden but I guarantee his name gets thrown around in a lot of the head coach job openings this offseason

Why did everyone like Guidry last year and not now?

Could it also be:

-de coaching wasn’t very good?
-lb coaching wasn’t very good?
-secondary talent is minimally good at best with only a couple good prospects in the 2-deep?

More things to consider.

Thanks to y'all for the responses.

Mostly curious how the decision came to be.

Bouncing around in the minors until the age of 52 isn't necessarily a common path before getting one's first job — much less a coordinator's role — at the Power conference level, particularly at a traditional power like Miami

Where was this energy last year?

He was literally the darling of the board last season & everyone wanted Dawson fired.

Lol you guys are funny man smh
It’s football coaching. What have you done for me lately? His defense was the reason Miami is just another ACC team and not a national championship contender. Can’t fire the players. Someone has to be the sacrificial lamb. I don’t know if he’s necessarily a bad coach. There are some things he’s done that i appreciate but we were pathetic defensively this year. All we had to be was average
