Guidry dropping back DE's

Let me know when one of the 280 lb linemen we drop into coverage break up a pass, let alone get an interception.

I understand why team occasionally drop a lineman when bringing some kind of exotic zone blitz but there’s certain times and places where you do this. Expecting DT sized ends to be able to cover 180lb running backs for more than a second is unrealistic.

For example, the Pierce interception was a very specific circumstance. Cleveland was in the rezone so they couldn’t stretch the field vertically. The Ravens just dropped Pierce five yards into a shirt hook zone and the Cleveland QB threw it right to him. The weren’t expecting Pierce to stay with a running back streaking down the sideline. They didn’t expect him to cover much more than a 6x6 square foot area of field. It’s about being realistic with your lineman’s coverage ability.
Our MLB couldn’t cover to save his life so I doubt our DLine would fare any better

355lb Michael Pierce was dropped back into zone coverage for the Ravens and got an INT. Dropping back DEs every now and then was not an issue. Guidry just sucked
Dropping NTs is the most ridiculous defensive call i can think of. Even JJ Watt mentioned it on one of the telecasts he was on recently. Yes, you will occasionally get lucky if a cross comes right behind the guy but most times it's a wasted play standing in space bc they are too **** big and slow to impact the play.

I’m not a defensive coach, guru, or expert by any means but the thing about Guidry that made no sense to me is this: If you see that your secondary isn’t very good and you’re not getting nearly enough pressure on the QB as you’d like, why not drop back into a soft zone more often and make teams kill you with 1,000 small cuts instead of constantly giving up big plays? Am I wrong here or what?
Lol multiple 12 + play drives in November then in bowl. Man we got killed by 1,000 small cuts constantly. That GT drive in the 2nd q haunts me.

That drive was pretty much all runs

No…not an alien concept.
Just got a flashback to the 2010 OSU game in the ‘Shoe.

The only logical explanation i have is that Guidry probaly tried that at practice and we probably looked worse. The few times I seen us in zone we looked even more confused than we did in man to man coverage

I heard I players on the back end didn't understand zone concepts.

Our biggest issue was we didn't replace Kam at safety
That’s a lame *** excuse not directed at you…

Other than meesh Guidry had worked with all of these players last year… pass given to OJ who seeemed like the only dude who ever played corner in his life this season

If you knew your room didn’t have the right knowledge of the scheme you should have got players who were smart and understood assignments. Even below average corner play would have been a huge leap in what we saw this past year

Yes. It's not the move, in and of itself.

But you can try those kinds of moves with players who can't handle the assignment. And you can overuse those moves. Just like stunting.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

I’m lover here like what the ****! I got middle schoolers that run cover 1, cover 3, cover 2, cover 4 and can make checks against all formations how the **** can’t a college kid do it?!

Then as a DC, you find something that they can understand. But if they can’t understand zone concepts, then either your DC sucks, or your DB coach ain’t worth a fucc. I’ve gotten special ed middle school kids to learn basic cover 2 schemes when I was at that level. Not trying to equate middle school with D1 P4 men, but to the staff, you either learn to teach them what they don’t understand, or we’ll find someone else to teach em.

people who have a blanket issue with dropping D-linemen into coverage don't understand football. simulated pressures and zone blitzes are a huge part of the game and you can't run them without actually dropping a DE every so often. if you want to take issue with how and when guidry called sim pressures then be my guest, but people just whining about seeing DLs in coverage simply don't know ball.
