He mentioned that he justified the 3-4 alignment this year because we didn't have that many DL and guys like McCord and AQM were developing into OLBs.

If we sign all these JUCO DL (let's say we sign 3), what are the chances that Golden decides on fielding a 4-3 defense next year? Or, was it a bit disingenuous to say that lack of DL was the reason we are mainly a 3-4 team this year?

I like showing multiple looks and mixing up the fronts. I just don't think we have adequate quality depth at either the D-Line or LB position. Given the comparative weaknesses between the two units, its a choice of the lesser of two evils: 4 or 3 inadequate lineman vs 4 or 3 inadequate linebackers?

Biggest problem we have is when we use four down lineman, not one player on our roster is someone teams have to account for; not one commands double teams. We simply cannot generate enough pressure with our front four. And when that doesn't happen, a whole world of hurt awaits as we have found out this past month.

I'll tell you what.

Guys like Johnson (if we get him) and Pierre are better suited as 4-3 DTs (3-tech) than 3-4 DEs IMO

Throw some 10-15 lbs on McCord and AQM and they're 4-3 DEs. Think Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo at LSU.

Besides the ex-drug dealer outta Cali, which other JUCO DT's you think sign?

Pelon and Johnson.

Our 3 down linemen sets look an awful lot like 4 down linemen sets. I don't think the problem with this defense is 3-4 versus 4-3. Instead, it's a problem with lack of aggression and lack of penetration up front. We play on our heels. We played a lot of 4-3 last year and looked equally ****** doing it due to the philosophy and approach of Corch Al and Corch Duh.

Our 3 down linemen sets is just the 4-3 depth chart with Green standing up instead of his hand being on the ground.

Exactly. We suck because of our approach to defense not because of our sets.

Preach!

yep, although Green is asked to drop into coverage about half the time, it seems. I love the guy but that is painful to watch.

Given the amount of free range space we allow runners and receivers, does it really matter. Heck, play a 1 - 10 and there wouldn't be an less pressure on the qb because on Dline isn't allowed to leave the arms of the offensive linemen. And we don't really need LBs since they line up about 6 yards deep anyway. Just play 10 dbs and hope the rbs trip over all their blockers.

I agree.. they both were pretty dominant and miingo is actually playing pretty darn good with the browns

Does it not cross anybody's mind that we actually use FIVE D-linemen for our 3-4.

The three down linemen are basically all D-tackles. Shayon Green is our strongside OLB, who's basically a D-lineman. And many times our weakside OLB is a DE/OLB hybrid.

That's FIVE D-lineman type players/bodies. But we run the 3-4 cause we're short on linemen?

Hmm, usually agree with your stuff but the only guys I've seen lined up at weakside OLB this year in our base sets have been Cornelius, Armbrister, and Figs. I think Cain might have been in short yardage situations vs UF as well.

Green is essentially a DL, we can't do anything creative with him at OLB because he lacks athleticism. I mean on 1st and 2nd down we expect Chick, Porter/Renfrow, Pierre, Green to be good at rushing the passer? I feel for Chick because he looks completely sapped of his athleticism and if you watched him in HS he was more then just a motor guy.

Wildcat, you know more then I do but to me everything that is advantageous about a 3-4 we do not take advantage of. Multiple looks, exotic blitzes, athletic OLB, etc.

You're right but i think ideally we'd like to have a hybrid guy at that spot as well.

But that's neither here nor there. You're last statement is spot on.

Its funny how at first kept reading a bunch of posts about fans wanting to go to 3-4 now it seem like alot of fans are wanting to go back to 4-3....its hilarious.

I don't remember anybody wanting to go to a 3-4.

It just seemed like everybody wanted clarity on what defensive system we'd be running under Goddens and Doritos.

I too remember a lot of people wanting a 3-4 and claiming 4-3 was behind the times.
Doesn't seem to make a difference in our play so 'carry on'.
