Golden said UM will have only 80 or so scholarship players

He probably said that because we can only sign 25 per year and we weren't able to keep up with all the attrition. Pretty simple if you ask me.

Even with attrition, that means we under-recruited heavily one year, or more than likely, several years, for us to be incapable of matching recruiting with attrition.

I think there's a bigger question: How did we get to the point where we're at 80 scholarship players, even having signed 34 kids this year?

We haven't yet. Golden would need to shoo a bunch of kids off the team first.

If this is true, then we aren't at 80 scholarship players. I took OP to mean we're at 80 with the incoming kids, not that we're at X and will be at 80 before next season.

The current roster right now, including the EE's, is 85. Add the 24 from today, and there are going to be some cuts. However, I easily counted 10-15 walk-ons in that roster so it is not going to be a gigantic number.

Yeah, but the walk-ons wouldn't count as scholarship players, so that still doesn't make sense. If we're at 85 scholarship players right now, with the EE's, and we've added 24, that means we're up to 109. If we're planning on getting down to 80, that means we're eliminating 29 kids.

Either I'm missing something, or there's going to be a **** of a lot more attrition than we're thinking.

It doesn't matter what your record is - to the NCAA - a bowl ban is a bowl ban.
Scholarship reductions are scholarship reductions.

OSU self-imposed such penalties as "soft drink machines reduced to half-full," "players would have to cook their own meals for two entire weekends," "Players had to be in by 4:00 AM on five consecutive weekdays," and so on.

Miami jumped on the investigation - OSU fought it and tried to conceal these things.

We suspended offending players per their particular violations which costs us games.
We self-imposed a bowl ban.
We cooperated in every aspect.

Now, we'll see what recruiting reductions they impose, and that will be that.

Cut everything you can early, and get it over with.

You want to go to the dentist and have him give you the novocaine and tug on your tooth a little bit day after day, or get the **** over with?

Gonna be a rough year with a lot of true freshman and sophomores seeing pt... but it'll pay dividends.

That's the point I've been trying to make for 6 months. 2012 is going to be rough, and its an even tougher situation when you think about depth. Freshmen backing up sophomores. Season is a grind. Its going to be 1998 all over again (which is a good thing for the program).

66 players on scholarship on the spring roster.

current 66 + 23 expected summer arrivals = 89 total

We would need to cut about 10 guys (give or take) on the current roster to get to 80.
