Smart: He finally publicly recognized and emphasized what i've been screaming about for months now - the need to stock up on OL this year. He said they were looking for 3-4 (i think 4 is the BARE MINIMUM).

Dumb: He reiterated a class of only 16ish kids. I'm looking at the roster right now and we've got plenty of room for 20-22 kids. If we're about to undergo sanctions, saving schollies is the most retarded thing you can do...you have to FRONTLOAD and make the team as YOUNG as you can so you can cushion yourself against the future reductions and still have talented players around 3-4 years down the line. That is what USC did. THat means being ruthless about getting rid of upperclass JAGs who are just gonna take up precious schollies and who wont even be around when we really need them 3-4 years down the line.

We have 81 schollie kids right now, 11 seniors. That means bare minimum we should have 15 schollies available. Then we've got several JAGs that can be let go,4th year JRs now that will graduate that we can let go easily, other attrition candidates like Thompson and Henderson.

Thompson (do we really want a kid that is only a part time player taking up a full schollie?)
Henderson (i doubt he sticks around and will go pro)
J Johnson (4th year JR, MIA from team)
C White (4th year JR)
A Cleveland (dude's fallen off a cliff)
Porter (will never stay healthy)
Grimble (can't consistently beat out true FR)
Robinson (already had major beef with staff, 4th year JR already)
Cain (4th year JR, where is he?)

That's 9 kids already with questionable futures here. Not all will be attrited of course but if even only half of them leave, that will allow us a 20ish man class. And we could really ***king use those schollies to beef up the OL, S, and other positions of need.

i think it will b more than 16...even tho he's sayin it...political answer

just by da fact he's sayin he wants 3/4 OL is indication class will b bigger than 16...

Why are people so ready to throw Grimble away? The guy is only a redshirt freshman and defensive tackle is one of the toughest positions to be successful at early. Was he overhyped coming out of high school? Probably, but that doesn't mean he'll never be a solid contributor.

So we allow our d to play like garbage due to youth. And your solution to that is to make the team even younger

Brilliant!

Because obviously the solution to finding success on the DL is uprooting developing upperclassmen with talented freshmen.

We should strive to never have someone over the age of 20 starting on our DL

I think he's a SO who played a decent amount last year and has a significant experience advantage over the FR. Yet, he has consistently remained a second, third or fourth teamer who cant consistently get ahead of these same FR and is now behind THREE of them. Sure, the depth charts are always fluid but contrast him with Pierre who has been named a starter in several depth charts already this year and came in at the same time as Grimble. No one is saying he SHOULD be let go, but he should definitely be considered a CANDIDATE to be let go pending future developments (will he step up? will the FR continue to consistently overtake him?)

FIFY.

When facing impending potentially devastating sanctions, you either get busy getting young talent or get busy DYING. Your choice. lol.

I'm figuring two or three quarterbacks will leave or change positions. Next year we will have a 4th, 5th, and 6th string quarterback. If you are 4th string do you stay?

Why would Golden say a bigger number.... so he could start getting asked who's getting kicked off once people do the math? To alleviate any leverage he might have in getting kids to "commit or lose their spot"?

this...

Our defensive tackle rotation is bad because we have too many youngsters = kick off veterans to make room for more youngsters. GOAT post.

does Golden not want a big pull in this years class knowing some schollie cuts are in the near future.......

The second half of the original post strikes me as a bit knee jerk. I think some of the guys who he wishes to see move on we actually need, e.g., Henderson, Robinson, and Grimble. Not quite ready to throw the towel in on them yet. Henderson has actually played well this season; Robinson has played well in spots though I admit that he seems to be better at getting up field/penetrating rather than trying to play 2 rushing lanes. Grimble was no where close to being ready to go last year and this year he isn't much better but he's still a youngster.

Again, I get the argument that we need to load up in case sanctions are tough, but I think we need to be a little more measured in our roster management. Agree too that we need to load up on OL; that's a really hard position to scout.
