UM NOTES
This is what good coaching looks like: Because Jim Larranaga’s team was struggling playing man to man defense, he decided in the past couple of weeks to switch to a matchup zone, an approach he hadn’t used much in his coaching career.
So he asked former Pittsburgh coach Ralph Willard and former Syracuse assistant Bernie Fine to come to South Florida to visit with his staff about the nuances of playing that defense.
Larranaga implemented it, and the change has had immediate results. Miami held No. 2 Syracuse to 44 points and 36.2 percent shooting in a five-point loss, then held North Carolina to 30.8 percent shooting in a 63-57 win.
The UNC game marked the first time Larranaga had been part of a game when a matchup zone was used the entire game. Overall, UM ranks 28[SUP]th[/SUP]in the country in points allowed per possession.
Despite a very limited roster without much depth, UM (9-6, 1-2) has been very competitive in three ACC games, with FloridaState visiting Wednesday.
Larranaga also credits Garrius Adams overcoming rust and a big contribution from forward Erik Swoope.

That my friends is what great coaches do, he saw something wasn't working and changed it to fit personnel .

Cough cough , Alfred, you reading this?

They would've just blamed Rion Brown for not executing and said something stupid about working their tails off.

Coach L is a legit coach, as opposed to the used car salesman the football program is stuck with. Coach L is the type of coach we've been begging the AD to hire for the football program since 2003.

NVA delivers a nice OP then 4th grade recess breaks out. Nice work guys.

Let me try: Al Golden is a big fat meanie face.

Wow. I feel so much better.

1. ACC Title in 2nd year, at a non-basketball power
2. Multiple signature wins
3. Properly adjusts scheme to personnel
4. Does more with less as a result of #3
5. Has team ready to play every game

That is a good coach. Love Coach L.

Coach L is an elite coach. Last year's team, for as much as it accomplished, was a very flawed team that only was able to achieve such heights because of Coach L and staff's great coaching. What he is doing this year is masterful as well after the loss of so many key players.

As map said above, this is the type of coach the football program needs to return to the top.

The bolded should be the primary metric for coaches.

So true.

Al thinks there is nothing wrong with his 500 club defense. Heard he is going to try, and see if he can push the power a little more, and squeeze out 600 YAG

So, we want Al's defense to play more zone?

No, just not 3-4 lb's on the field against spread formations , maybe putting 5-6 db 's on the field.
I hear it's a new invention called nickel and dime . Pretty neat concept .
