From Redmond on their 247 board:
I need to start chronologically starting with the end of the South Carolina game. Mullen and Stricklin 'ran into each other' in the tunnel in Columbia and there was a one-sided heated exchange between Stricklin and Mullen. All that was heard at that time is that there had to be serious changes and improvements by next week.
Well, with Samford on the schedule I half blew this off but it was then made very clear that this was a serious blowup by Stricklin in a not-so-private setting.
Like the Saturday Down South article, I was told that Monday was a big day here for Mullen and that staff changes had to be made, not necessarily public and removed right away, but the powers that be had to be told.
There is one serious dynamic that has changed in Stricklin’s tenure so far at Florida. With all the facilities building, he has really pressed high dollar donors for money and then even more s during the pandemic. Well unlike Foley who never did that, Stricklin is now feeling the heat from those people. Trust me, this is an absolutely new situation in Gainesville even though it is nothing like what we have seen in the past at places like Auburn.
So here is the last part of it all. Mullen has been told to make changes and show improvement. We know what areas need to be fixed but I’m not privy to what was actually said. He was given a timetable to make changes and that is Monday at some point. But I heard there is possibly more to this.
Before I get into this let me say this. Those that have followed me through the years know I am a coach defender (coach apologist to some of you). I worked with the Florida staff for 10 years and I see how much time and dedication it takes to the job. But I have posted this a few times here that Mullen lost me back in January with the whole NFL flirtation. It wasn’t the flirtation itself because I understood that. It was the complete and utter indifference to the harm it could do to recruiting not only for that 2021 class, but also the 2022 class because that is when his staff should really be ready to seal up some kids for this class. I mean as if we didn’t need more evidence of the lack of importance he places on recruiting.
I am hearing there will be at least one public change and we will find out early tomorrow, and that pressure is coming hard. I know there will be other changes but I believe they won’t be announced tomorrow, but have to be decided on by tomorrow.
The last part is all my speculation. First, Mullen has never been in a situation to have to do what he is being forced to do right now. His OC stops before Florida were all winning situations and they made steps up to get here. He had one rough year on offense in 2005 and even the 2006 offense wasn’t great averaging just 22 points per game in regular season contests. But they won the national title that year. The next year was the most explosive offense ever and Tebow won the Heisman. The next year he won another national title and then moved on to Mississippi State.
At MSU it was a rough start, but you don’t get pressure there and you do have time to build it and he did a commendable job and got to where he could choose between Florida and Tennessee in 2018.
But at Florida, this is all new to him. He’s really loyal to staff and older players and we know to a fault. He’s not going to like doing what he’s being told to do and in the end I really believe that is going to crack him. His biggest problem is that a high level Power-5 head coaching job will be out of the question for him so he’s going to have to take a huge monetary and ego hit. But I do expect it to happen.
He already looks like a guy that has quit at times. I think he actually will in the last few weeks. Either way, we are going to see a lot of changes.
