Gabe Taylor

You’re right. But it’s also not that easy. Everyone on this board loved Clyde pinder and he’s portaling. And he was a more highly rated recruit. You win some you lose some.
I agree that it’s not that simple but we only hit on two 3 star recruits, Rousseau and Zion. We need a better batting average, if we want to start winning more.

Remember this guy? The stud who's Big Bro was none other than The Legendary Sean Taylor and we screwed up all because he didnt have the star ratings smh.

Your "Jim Thorpe" award photo above is actually just for Gabe Taylor being named as the best DB for ONE game only, ie that particular week, as determined by the sponsor of the award (Paycom).
He certainly has NOT won the actual Jim Thorpe award; that award is given out later at the end of the season.
In fact he's NOT even listed as one of the 12 semifinalistd for the actual annual Jim Thorpe award.

Looks like the game in question was against a 5-3 UAB team ranked 65th in the nation. Good for him regardless.

Hindsight / I told you so posts are easy to type; there's times when perhaps we should have offered just as there's also plenty of times we should be glad that we didn't offer. Can't say we screwed up though.

Let's see how it plays out over the next few seasons. As just a few examples remember G Hall flashed tor maybe a couple of games a couple years back. Now he just gets criticized. Bolden too had an awesome game or 1/2 a game last year but hasn't appeared to keep up that same level (and unfortunately now he's hurt).

Don't know Taylor but wish him well. Don't however see UM as ******** up by not offering him.

Right.....but at schools that are academically selective, Like Miami.......it means you can get in! We toured UF's football facilities a couple years ago, they said they have 3 PWO spots each year that are highly coveted because of how selective normal student admissions have become.
Nah those students still have to apply like any other student. Many schools just limit how many walk-ons they bring on. UF is a competitive school to get in so more than likely those students already have the grades to be admitted. Same as Miami. To be honest, many colleges don’t want to deal with walk-ons because more than like the majority of those kids aren’t fbs caliber. There’s always a few but that’s it. UF would have nearly 100+ kids trying to walk on if they have try-outs and only a couple are talented enough to get reps in practice. That’s why if a student has a g5 offer, they should just take it instead of walking on.

The ***** up wasn’t in failing to offer Taylor. It was in taking Keyshawn Washington and Jalen Harrell. The chasm between those two and the 2 Williams kids and Kinchens is vast.

Yall gave up on freshman already?.

I didnt like Washington....but that mfer was laying ppl down in the spring game...He isnt going to be needed to play for awhile and might have to transfer out down the road...not because he isnt good but because that safety group will be filled with players.

Guys like Balom will be back with an extra year still and he can play as well. Avantae Williams as well.

Uhhh it means that you don’t have to try out every year…like every other ******* walk on. That’s why you’re “preferred”. You also get the same criteria a scholarship athlete gets.

Not what I meant.

This isnt the 1960s, if a player tries out and make the team as a freshman they are not going to have to try out every year. College programs are desperate for practice bodies especially Lineman. If you recall UM was desperate a couple years ago for Lineman and posted flyers all around campus. Skill position bodies are in demand now too especially in offseason when a lot of 7 on 7 practices happen.

A “offer” signifies that a kid is being admitted into to the school and that is not the case. Students have to be accepted into school, pay tuition and be in good academic standing before they can become walkons.

It would be nice if Gabe Taylor does transfer eventually (like some are saying) that we let him rock the 26 jersey and then let him retire it. Number should've been retired already IMO but I think that would be a good way to do it.

everyone I know was high on Balom, felt he was underrated. Safety is by far our deepest position.

Good for Taylor. I do think we could use him on the team. But it’s hard to complain about our top three guys and Balom. That group is stout.

I didn’t give up on Balom. Definitely thought he was a take and think he’ll be a contributor this year. I was critical of taking Washington and Harrell. But that’s water under the bridge. Hope they find a role.
