FWIW - Ferman sez Bond will play SAM lb

You want your Sam to be bigger because he often has to take on blocks from TE's and set the edge. Depending on the front, he'll sometimes be lined up right on top of the TE.

If there's a TE and we're playing 'man' then most likely that's who he'll cover but it could also be a Safety covering the TE. If it's zone then the Sam's got flats or hook/curl.

There's nothing that says the Sam is the one who always blitzes. Any LB can blitz, and if you're running a 3-4 then it can be either one of the OLB's. I think they just want him at Sam cause he's one of our bigger LB's. McCord is not ready to play the Sam yet IMO.

Anybody seen any highlights of Bond dropping into coverage?

All I remember from his film was this

Hopefully Blue can make an impact this year because he definitely looks the part. If Bond is indeed 240 then **** he has been puttin in WORK. He should be ready to contribute immediately. Im sure the staff told him that he needs to "get on the good foot" and NOW especially since Terry, EJ, and Paul are all gone. The spot is his for the taking.

Looks 240 to me!!!

I saw his highlight film and it looked like he was blanket covering the quarterback on every play. I especially liked the first one where he leaps in the air and destroys the qb. Gives me a chuckle every time.

That ain't his game.
This is true, but at the same time you can't be one dimensional as a player. Even the best pass rushers in the NFL have to drop into coverage every once in a while to keep teams honest.

Demarcus Ware doesn't rush the passer every play.

I love that highlight of AQM dropping back and making that one handed interception in his highlight video..Guess I should post it..6:20 mark

They didn't bring Bond in here to cover receivers. He's here to kill QBs.

Sometimes, guys get too caught up in trying to be well-rounded knowledgeable fans, who love to p1ss on parties and ax questions that make them appear astute, instead of realizing and appreciating a player's strength and role. LT ain't in the HOF for his pass coverage skills. And Demarcus Ware won't be either.

On passing downs I would love to see Chick slide inside with Pierre and have Bond at 1 DE spot and McCord at the other. I feel like that DL, while a liability against the run could do some big things rushing the passer.

If Bond is worse than EJ in pass coverage I doubt he sees the field much at all this year.

James Harrison didnt make his money dropping into coverage so they are alot of cases where its not necessary. Would it be gravy? Of course. But as bad as our pass rush was last year I think I will be just fine if he cant cover Nick O Leary goin up the seam. I will let Bush lay his a$$ out. And let Bond worry about makin sure Jamais Winston and Driskel hit the grass as much as possible. I would absolutely LOVE if Bond/AQM and Chick have Driskel vomiting his guts out like Darren Krein and Kevin Patrick had Marvin Graves when we played Syracuse in 93'! Lol!

You can be the worst player ever in coverage but if you get constant pressure on the qb then you'll always have a job or pt. How you cover means nothing if you're coming after the qb on pass downs.

Very overrated.

I get the feeling that for some of these guys "SAM LB" means "pass rushing specialist." Everybody has a named position. There's no position on the field named "pass rushing specialist." I highly doubt McCord will be playing a lot of strongside linebacker this year because what I've seen of him doesn't translate that well to that spot. He's probably just going to rush the passer. This guy may be the same. If all he did in juco is rush the passer--I don't know because I don't follow recruiting much--then I doubt he'll roll in here and be some solid all-purpose strongside linebacker. The strongside linebacker spot is likely to be a weakness for us this year because it isn't an easy position and the best candidate is a true freshman right now. Guys like this guy are probably seen most as pass rushers by the coaches because our #1 need is people who can get to the quarterback. Unfortunately I'm not sure that we have enough on the inside to help these guys and so we'll probably be fairly reliant on the blitz ala our 2000 team which also had a weak pass-rushing DL.

Not me. A Sam is a stronside lb, plain and simple . All three lbs blitz even though in most 4-3 schemes the Sam might blitz a little more . I don't think Bond or McCord will be on the field in the base defense . IMO Figs, DP and Kirby will be the base guys and McCord /Bond will be lined up off the edge on pass downs. More nickel and dime guys.

I don't think they're technically Sams, more Standup ends or even hand in the dirt guys. That's why I keep calling them specialists . If we ran a 3-4 then they'd be perfect in the base package.

My point is they'll be rushing majority of their snaps , just that simple
