FSU game was a cautionary tale for Miami

We had a much better defense. If we don’t have Ward, I think it’s a safe bet we are 5-3. Lose to VT, Cal, Louisville. It’s obviously better than 1-7. However 3 conference losses and only 1 win against FSU mean we are 1-3 in conference. Here’s the conference standings. You tell me where 1-3 fits in the conference and how far it is from FSU. I’ll give you a hint.

I have ZERO interest in being a Debbie Downer today but since you brought it up-

5-3 with 1 conference win and 3 conference losses gets you nothing but a cup of coffee. If we switched QBs they are at least 4-4 with that exact same roster. I think they have a much better defense than we do. The way they played UM is actually a great way to keep an explosive offense under control. I was reasonably impressed with how they limited Ward. If they have any semblance of a passing game, it’s a much different ballgame. With Ward they beat BC, Memphis, Cal, and Duke for sure. Not outside realm of possibility they upset Clemson and I think that squad with Ward has a good chance of beating us if we have Williams starting.

We are really deficient on defense. If we play any offense with a pulse, we have to score 45 points or more. Williams isn’t getting us 45 ppg. We are soft up the middle, and have no speed at LB or DB. And that’s not even factoring in the atrocious tackling. Miami should have raided the portal for DBs like Ole Miss did. There were some quality players but apparently UM wanted an elite DB and when it didn’t get one, staff said “Top DB was a luxury. we’re ok with what we have.” And Kiko is a serviceable LB if playing against a run heavy team but he’s a huge liability if having to play pass D or make an open field tackle. It’s been recruiting malpractice at LB and DB. NT is impossible to get in the portal so I’m not holding that against the staff. If you have faith in the coaches to fix it with recruiting, then great it’s solved in 2-3 years. But in the meantime you HAVE to put on a band aid, which is what the portal is for.

again- I want to celebrate today so let’s just be positive about the win. I certainly would not have started a thread to ***** about the game even if I am concerned about things I saw. We are lucky to have Ward.

I didn’t really bother reading all this.

5-3 > 1-7

At 5-3 you’d still have a chance to finish strong, win a bowl game (1-7 is already eliminated from bowl contention) and maybe salvage a good recruiting class.

1-7 makes you the one of the worst teams in college football and the laughing stock of the rest of the country. There’s no hope for anything positive and you’re just praying whatever decent recruits you’ve tricked into coming don’t change their minds.

FSU would KILL to be Miami without Cam Ward because that team would still be way better than what they have.

Cautionary tale in regards to talent acquisition and development of the quarterback position in the modern era. FSU had two of their three existing quarterbacks transfer out after the 2023 season, leaving just Glenn. Then they added Kromenhoek and DJ. DJ is now out and Kromenhoek is extremely raw.

If Cam were to suddenly sit out the rest of the season, Miami still has Emory and Poffenberger before they had to get to the Kromenhoek analogue in Judd Anderson.

You ain’t kidding. Only got a pedicure once, while on my honeymoon. They take sticks and start shoving your cuticles on you toes, not for me, never again. Was told it was relaxing, that was a lie.

Your "safe to say" is just silly. If Ward weren't here every game would play out differently. We'd run and throw differently. No reason to believe the outcome would be different. You don't just say "if you take away ward" like that means something. If your mother had balls, she'd be your dad.
