Fletcher is not hurt

Worst part, WE ALL KNEW THIS GOING IN..

He wasnt here for spring and he played in a under center down hill run game. WE knew it would take some time to adjust to running out of shotgun.. Fletcher played in scheme and probably more comfortable..

Weird how our fans want to toss both Martinez and Brown after a couple games when its a long 16 game season.. Let these boys settle in and get right.. Both werent here for spring and got in late, we would hope both plug and play but growing pains can happen.
Yeah I’m just having a hard time taking people seriously that are basically saying Dawson only wants to run it up the middle

Not saying we don’t have work to do but it’s the same tired thing we heard about tight ends last year

People still wont accept that Dawson might actually know what he’s doing

Which I think had a lot to do with why he got most of the reps after Cooper got hurt. We had 3 backup OL in with the first team and there were times he had to bail Lou, etc. out in pass pro.

Yeah Fletcher saved this TD pass. Lou's guy had beat him badly.

I think it was either Miami OH or Temple last year, Temple I think. Fletcher had a TD run called back he had embarrassed a safety in the middle of the field with just one little step. A RB that big doesn’t need much wiggle to break a big play if the defender is worried about getting run over
Therein lies the rub.

Fletcher's looked good against FAMU & Ball St this year. Last year it was Miami OH & Temple.

The question is can Fletcher consistently makes these type of runs against Power Conference teams? Right now Martinez has a proven track record of doing that, and Fletcher is still a projection.

We'll see how it plays out - but IMO Martinez does things that Fletcher simply can't do.

Agreed

I think Martinez is the better back but Fletcher is currently playing better right now. For a lot of reasons that have already been exhausted but I just think Fletcher is more comfortable at the moment

Alabama and Georgia always stocked up on backs who weighed more than 225 pounds for a reason. It goes beyond the stopwatch. There is an intangible quality to forcing the other team to tackle those guys for four quarters.
the run that opened the floodgates for our running game against ball state was fletcher taking a play that was blocked for 1-2 yards and driving his feet for like 7. that stuff matters a lot.

It's also year 2 for him. He's still growing/developing physically and mentally.
Hope he continues to grow and improve.

Thoughts on OP saying he’s > than Martinez?

Were our expectations too high on DM? Has he just not had enough time yet? Run blocking not helping him out?
In another thread, @Cribby alluded to the fact Marines is a lot better if a runner in an I set or pistol/ace rather than shotgun.

Kinda agree.
Some RBs run better out of shotgun, some not.
But Martinez is a stud, I think he'll be okay.

Don’t know about you all but there is something about Fletcher that is different post injury. To me, he’s leaner, stronger, quicker, faster. Has anyone else seen this ?
He seems more decisive, which is actually the opposite of what you'd expect so soon after returning from injury

I also think they’re being careful with him. We’ll see more of him as the year goes on. But this is a drastic jump from what he did at OSU. All of that said nobody on this roster is better than him . We’ll see when he’s fully unleashed.

People are talking like this guy isn't a 2 time 1st team All conference back. That's not fluky.

I’m surprised we haven’t run more plays from pistol this year to take advantage of DM. Maybe things yet to come

I don’t know why anyone is alarmed about the run game. It’ll continue to evolve and get better as the season rolls on. When you can pass at the level we are right now it’s really a non issue. Plenty of RB talent and capability with the Oline. If the roles were reversed and we were running like crazy and not passing well I would be alarmed.
