First drive.. what happened afterwards? Football talk...

FSU did put out a blueprint to give Cam Ward and our offense trouble. Press man and blitzing. Obviously, this requires a good secondary and Miami probably won't face this until the ACCCG or the playoffs.

First drive looked like a heavy RPO fast paced drive.

Second drive looked like a back yard football attempt. Many times we tried to get the pass going we seemed to revert to that. I think it's our identity. I don't think we can do that against teams with some talent.

FSU was ready for the back yard stuff. Credit to them.

Must have passes were mostly good play design.

you basically have to have the exact personnel combo that FSU has- a good DL (as low-effort as they've been all year, they have serious talent and you knew they weren't gonna completely phone it in for this game) and corners that are adept at press man (azareye'h thomas is REALLY underrated in this regard; i think he's going to climb up draft boards this year when scouts sift through the mess that is the rest of FSU's tape). if you have a good DL but poor corners (like us, lol) you're generally gonna play off so you don't get toasted. if you have corners that can press but your DL can't get home, eventually the WRs are going to separate (especially with a QB like cam who will do scramble drill stuff). having both is rare enough in college football that even the best college receivers usually don't have a lot of experience against press coverage, and it tends to be one of the first things that a lot of guys need to work on when they get to the nfl because they see a lot more of it. as dynamic as our guys are, dudes like george and brown don't play with the physicality to hold up against well-executed press.

like you said, if we get into the playoff and start playing the top teams in CFB it'll be something we need to deal with, but i suspect we won't see another team as good at it until then. crazy thing about FSU is that they are clearly the overall worst P4 team we've played, yet at several key position groups on defense, they probably have the most raw talent. what a waste, honestly.

So I was at the game last night (from Maryland)with 2 of my sons. Spent $3k (Since it was last minute) on hotel, good tickets, flights etc and it was worth every penny.

I'm reading the board and seeing a lot of basically "the offense took what the defense gave."

But I'm wondering about the first drive.

First drive we go straight down the field and scored a quick and what looked like an easy TD..quick passes. Tempo. Good blocking in the run game. And no need for long blocks in the pass game because the passes came out so quick. WRs picking up YAC because they made catches in stride. Just smooth and easy.

My sons and I looked at each other and said "we're going to score 50+! That was too easy!"

Then the rest of the game the offense looked completely different.

Did FSU change something on D after the first drive? Looking at the highlights it looks like they were playing cover 2 with the safeties most of the first drive and we just were hitting short/underneath routes. The tempo seemed to open up the pass and run game.

Did Dawson just change things up? Did Cam just stop taking the short underneath stuff? Was it just the first drive script and Dawson ran out of good stuff? Or was that the plan to get up quickly and then focus on dominating the line of scrimmage and running clock?

If I'm adding up the drive chart correctly Cam was 4/5 for 53 yards on a 67 yard drive (1 yard short of a TD pass as well.)
If you listen to some people on here they'll tell you fspoo did a great job in coverage and getting after the passer etc. reality is we saw their offense and said only way this is even a close game is if we give it away with mistakes. As boring as that made our approach, I can't really argue the facts. The point is winning. We knew they couldn't stop us and if that's the conclusion drawn than why do anything other than run the ball down their throat and show everyone exactly how weak that team from the north is...

Like everyone today, the plays for the 1st drive were pre scripted and they tend to run at a higher success % than not. The WR routes didn't have enough medium route's or check downs for me. It didn't make sense against 2 high. Cam also had issues making the right checks against the blitz, like hot routes. I absolutely loved what we did with the run game. We need this run game clicking in playoff ball. I haven’t rewatched the game yet so I could have some different thoughts with a break down. Most likely more.

Nobody can dissect the game and ask questions? Just look at the win loss column and stfu is your attitude. The discussion of the game, what worked, what didn’t, is the entire reason this board exists. You just want us all to sit around going rah rah. How fun is that?
I think he probably thinks Miami Coaches are not going to watch the tape to get better.
