CORAL GABLES — The fifth practice of Miami’s preseason is underway as I type. It was the first in full gear as mandated by the NCAA. Here are a few notes as you begin your Tuesday …

Freshman defensive back Tracy Howard wore a black jersey typically reserved for starters and the hardest working players. He was not listed on initial depth chart released last week and was not wearing black in the previous practices.

In other wardrobe news, another former star recruit/freshman wore a red jersey today. Running back Randy “Duke” Johnson wore the color traditionally reserved for injured players, but he was fielding kickoffs early in practice just as he had been doing in previous practices.

Speaking of Johnson, his nickname apparently isn’t used by everyone on the team. Linebacker Denzel Perryman said quarterback Stephen Morris refuses to call him “Duke” until he earns it.

Also in uniform color news, starting linebacker Jimmy Gaines also continues to wear yellow to signify limited contact due to injury.

Yes, Seantrel Henderson was there again today. He was the only player not in full pads since he must acclimate the same way the rest of the team did, just on a delayed schedule.

Interesting. I know its early, but would not be the worse thing for Gaines to 'shirt this year.

I like Perryman and Morris but stop acting like you've been there and done that. Beat scrub *** teams like UVa, MD, etc before you start withholding nicknames and telling people to earn stuff.

Tracy Howard in a black shirt... already!

Hopefully Duke's injury is a minor one. It's important he gets all he can from the Fall camp.

Howard starting is good new IMO. Glad to hear he has the work ethic to match the talent.

Howard starting could just be a motivational thing for McGee, but if he needs motivational tactics at this point idk what to say. We've had good freshman corners in the past, so no reason to doubt TH, but just weird that we've heard all these great things about McGee finally stepping up and then he gets past by a true frosh 5 days into practice.

Read the article again. Perryman was stating what Morris calls him, not what he personally calls him.

Has Golden ever said black jerseys signify starters?

Pierre and EJ have also worn/are wearing black jerseys, don't think they are necessarily starters at this point

It's too late for motivation with McGee, Howard is just better with him already.

Disagree to an extent. Maybe they have seen that entitlement mentality ingrained in the culture and want to be leaders who make sure the incoming guys don't fall for their own press clippings. I understand your implications that Morris and Perryman haven't exactly set the world abalze just yet. Point taken there.

I will ask again. Where does it say Perryman refuses to call him Duke?

thats the type of behavior that got us in this mess in the frist place its good there being leaders out there humbling kids

Exactly some of you "fans" I use that term very loosely have no clue. T.Howard hasn't over taken McGee. lol one practice could be giving the young pup some time. Some of you "fans" seriously go pound sand!

**** dude...kinda harsh. You McGee's cousin or boyfriend or somethin'.............they were just giving the boy props for sportin' the black jersey....

It could be a motivational thing for McGee or it could be a situation where Golden is simulating a game where a starter gets injured and the next guy has to be ready to step up.

We don't know but you can look at it a number of different ways.

I actually like the fact that Morris and Perryman are stepping up, this team needs leaders like now, people that will hold other players accountable. That will eventually snowball into the whole team being more accountable. Nothing but good can come of leadership even if they havent beaten UVA. Seriously, Go Canes.

That's a *****-*** post, and the kind that will get you negged by me in the future if you continue.

This was a good discussion about the culture of the team, incoming freshmen, symantics, and Golden's jersey system. Then you come in throwing fireballs about the 'fans' who aren't really fans, according to your judgement. Turrible. Take that mentality back to Grassy. Add something substantive (or funny, at least) to the thread, or don't post.

To the previous debate, I have no problem with the starting QB refusing to call an incoming true freshman by anything but his proper first name. His mamma call him Randy, imma... Also, I thought black jerseys were just a notation on who worked the hardest. Not necessarily the starters. Clarification would be appreciated.

The Black Jerseys are like the rep system here you don't want to be in the red cause everyone will just think of you as a trolling scrub

McGhee has had 1 INT his entire career at Miami. It's not like Tracy Howard is trying to beat out Patrick Johnson out there.
