Fair assessment of 2014 Defense

As long as the same corches are running the same system with the same philosophy our defense will continue to underachieve. Plugging a bunch of freshmans in will not help the cause.

The part in bold is key.

Sure the talent is lacking but that doesn't mean we shouldn't do better. We let up 90 points in 2 games to Duke and VT and neither are offensive juggernauts. We could have done much better with the talent we have. I am sure some better talent would improve the result, the variable that isn't changing is the coaching/scheme.

Change the DLine coach and DC IMO. Not worried about the talent improving, just about the coaching.

Agreed. With the 2 DT Juco's, I think we might have the horses to keep the lineman off the LBs. The LBs play will be critical this upcoming year, as I see it at the last weakness. If Perryman leaves, that only makes it worse. EJ being gone really hurt this year. I think that flat pattern we got burned on over and over all year long might not have been as bad if EJ was here.

But either way, if you DL doesn't keep bodies off the LBs, you done. Still think Dorito is the problem though.

unless Strong safety play gets better and in a hurry we are doomed.....my ***** with coach d is not using the SS or continuing to rotate this position...

the SS is the QB of the D...look at DUKE's with CASH a four star coming from OSU to duke...kid helped them bit time....

Get a SS that plays every down we are golden...

aka, Reed, Tayor, Merriman etc,,,,,,

I'm assuming D'Ono's philosophy is that yards don't matter. Giving up points matters. But i would counter that giving up endless yards leads to the defense being on the field more. and as the defense tires, that in turn inevitably leads to points and (thankfully not so much this year) injuries to players.
I'm definitely not an X's and O's guru but i just dont "get" our defense. i don't think we take advantage of who we have and who we can get (south florida recruiting wise). and that, as others have stated, leads to underachieving.

I disagree. "Troublesome"? I don't think our defense will be where we want it to be by next year, but I expect it to be light years ahead of the 2013 squad. Unfortunately I think we're still going to have to play more true freshmen than we'd like, but I expect drastic improvement with addition by subtraction.

LMAO. based on what?

The fact that people in here really believe that we will be better by expecting freshman to contribute in a gap control scheme is mind-boggling.

as the saying goes, You can't fix stupid.

I dunno.

DE Chick (Sr.) DT Pierre (Sr.) DT Wyche DE Muhammd (Soph.)

DE Kamalu (Sr.) DT Heurtelou (Jr.) DT Hamilton (Jr.) DE McCord (Jr.)

DE Moten (Fr.) DT Valentine (Fr.) DT King (Jr.) DE Thomas (Fr.)

DE Perry (Sr.) DT Moore (Jr.) DT Jenkins (Fr.) DE Jackson (Fr.)

(in my 4-3 dreams)

Good mix of vets and young talent. I expect Valentine and Moten will get in the rotation, depending on what Hamilton does, but not take as many snaps as Mc and AQM did as freshmens.

Exactly. We lose a lot off the dline. We're bringing in some big time talent, but they're true freshmen. True freshmen dlineman are worthless. It's not a position that you can just step in and dominate. Look at how AQM got pushed around this year. These freshmen will need a year or two to gain size and strength and technique.

The secondary will be strong but the front 7 probably won't be any better unless these juco guys are all world or guys like kamalu, hamilton, moore surprise us.

All of this personnel talk is really moot though. It's all about the coaches. New dc and we can easily have a good (not great) defense. No new dc and our defense will suck no matter who we bring in or how much the existing players improve.

It's an idiotic philosophy. It should not be difficult to grasp the concept that more yards will lead to more points. You cannot count on turnovers to save you on a weekly basis.

Scheme blows its made for team that dont have the team speed to cover teams. I would give staff one more year than i would fire AG and his buddy if it continues

I'd be there with you if we were in fact running Shannon's D. The passive patty cake crap that Golden/Dorito run is setting us up to fail again. This D will go as the front 7 goes.

Whether the issue is coaching, a lack of talent or a combination of both, the Miami Hurricanes appear in for at least one more troublesome year on the defensive side of the ball.

Please refrain from fair assessments, this is a message board and there are children around.

keep away from fairness in general, smh, what has this board become?

Or what it will become.
