Fair assessment of 2014 Defense

I disagree. "Troublesome"? I don't think our defense will be where we want it to be by next year, but I expect it to be light years ahead of the 2013 squad. Unfortunately I think we're still going to have to play more true freshmen than we'd like, but I expect drastic improvement with addition by subtraction.

As long as the same corches are running the same system with the same philosophy our defense will continue to underachieve. Plugging a bunch of freshmans in will not help the cause.

The part in bold is key.

Sure the talent is lacking but that doesn't mean we shouldn't do better. We let up 90 points in 2 games to Duke and VT and neither are offensive juggernauts. We could have done much better with the talent we have. I am sure some better talent would improve the result, the variable that isn't changing is the coaching/scheme.

Change the DLine coach and DC IMO. Not worried about the talent improving, just about the coaching.

The author didn't dik around, starting with "Whether the issue us coaching . . . "

Second paragraph is much akin, "While it's unknown what head coach Al Golden plans to do regarding coaching staff changes . . . "

Oh yeah. Defensive Coordinator suks.

If the scheme is like this year, our D will be in the bottom 3 in ACC next year. Sorry but it is what it is!!!!!!!

Yeah Far,

I hope changes are made in the front seven's scheme---FORCE the action. But, the D-Line will be young but more talented. Play to the strength of the team which is the secondary IMO.

"Players not plays"?

I expect the sunshine gang to pump up 2014 defense until they actually hit the field. Then they will find some reason to blame their struggles and support the coaches blindly. We didnt play a tough schedule at all and got torched as the season went on, I dont know our schedule next year but it has to be tougher. Maybe after 4 years people will finally get it.

4-3 starting line up for depth chart purposes

DL Chickillo, Pierre, Wyche, AQM

WLB Perryman/Grace, MLB Kirby, SLB McCord/Armbrister/Figs

CB Gunter, Howard, FS Jenkins, SS Bush, Nickel Burns/Crawford That defense should be top 30-40.. Coach D last chance.. The secondary should be top 10 in the nation. And Chickillo, Perryman, Gunter, Bush, Pierre will all be going into there 3rd year starting with Perryman and Chickillo being 4th year starters... No excuses i mean the ACC is already weak it should be no problem to field a **** top 40 defense...

10-2, At worst 9-3 win the coastal or Golden's buddy is fired and AL gets one more year to win the coastal before he is gone..

I actually think our defense will be much better next year in spite of corch D still being here. I like Gaines and Cornie but damm if it didn't feel like every 3rd and long/medium that was converted against us was because of an error by one of these 2 guys.

Our LB play should be much improved next season especially if DP comes back.

ETA: One huge negative factor for our D is losing O'Donnell. A weapon like that is hard to replace and we will feel it next season if we can't find a suitable replacement for him.

The fact that people in here really believe that we will be better by expecting freshman to contribute in a gap control scheme is mind-boggling.

This article is an assessment on talent so I won't discuss coaching implications other than I 'd like to see the DC and D-Line Coaches gone.

(1) Safety (2014 talent much > than 2013); WHY?

-Deon Bush will have a bounce back yr as it takes a full yr to recovery your strength and speed coming off that sports hernia. He did not have the same level of athleticism this yr;
-Addition by subtraction imo as Highsmith and Rodgers failed to make open field tackles or plays on the ball too many times in their careers and werent great athletes;
-Jamal Carter, Kiy Hester and Gayot are talented pieces who could see time and are big time athletes;

(2) CB (2014 expected strength = 2013 strength)

-Tracy Howard and Artie Burns are big time talents that could further develop and are supported by good depth in Crawford and Gunter.
-J.C. Jackson if flipped would make this unit even more scary good and I like Corn Elder a lot

(3) LB (2014 talent comparison to 2013 depends on if Perryman stays)

-Kirby replacing Gaines is addition by subtraction however I expect growing pains as Kirby still has not seen that many reps in games;
-Perryman if he stays will lock down the WLB and with an extra yr of strength/develop Grace can provide better depth;
-Figs replacing Cornelius is addition by subtraction however I am concerned about his injury potential with these consistent shoulder injuries. Additionally, I think Darrion Owens is a big time pull but not sure he plays in 2014;
-Overall, I think we need to pull some big time difference making talent the next recruiting class in 2015 at backer after acquiring good depth in this 2014 class;

(4) Hybrid OLB/DE (2014 > 2013) due to player development & recruiting

-I think both McCord and AQM continue to get stronger and improve. Imo solely my getting stronger through another Utough both McCord and AQM could have a bigger impact as a result of seeing more snaps than just being 3rd down pass rush specialists. I would also like to see Muhammed add some more pass rush moves;
-We are also adding big time talent in Chad Thomas and DJackson and Trent Harris however the latter 2 will likely redshirt;
-The only loss will be Shayon's leadership but he's lack of mobility also hurt the team at times;

(5) DE / DT (2014 likely < 2013 due to losing a lot of bodies but really a big ?)

- We lose a lot of players (Porter, Renfrow, Robinson, etc.) who weren't exactly good but held up the point of attack better than 2012 at least;
-This unit could get better as a result of bounce back years from 3G (who I hope works on his agility/speed) and Pierre who didn't have a great yr;
-I also really like what I saw out of Kamalu in his limited role this yr;
-Wyche and possible Calvin if admitted should at least be able to replace the role of the departures in holding the line from a strength standpoint;
-Valentine and Moten are big time talents coming in but I think they likely won't make that impact til 2015;

Therefore, Overall I think the Def improves moderately due to more talent seeing the field. However, I think it will be marked by inconsistency as it is youthful talent and I also think given our DE/DT situation we will continue to get gashed by the Run. I think 2015 is the yr if we continue to recruit the Front 7 with game changers that we really see a legit Def from an overall talent standpoint.

I honestly think we'll have more talent on the field next year than we had this year.

Green, Cornelius, Gaines, Rodgers and Highsmith will all be replaced by better players. If Perryman leaves then that position will take a hit, but overall I think we'll be a more talented defense.

However, like someone else said, we'll continue to underachieve as long as we're running this scheme that is designed to yield yards while waiting for the opponent to make mistakes.
