Explosive plays vs. Syracuse

Who will win the big-play battle on Saturday? Both teams can move the ball, but Miami is more dangerous. Compare the national ranks in long scrimmage plays:

Syracuse offense

10+ yard plays- 5th
20+ yard plays- 12th
30+ yard plays- 63rd
40+ yard plays- 117th
50+ yard plays- 115th

Miami offense

10+ yard plays- 1st
20+ yard plays- 2nd
30+ yard plays- 10th
40+ yard plays- 7th
50+ yard plays- 4th

On the other end, both the Canes and the Orangemen have struggled with big plays. Look at the drop off in national rank as you get deeper down the field:

Miami defense

10+ yard plays- 22nd
20+ yard plays- 57th
30+ yard plays- 25th
40+ yard plays- 79th
50+ yard plays- 106th

Syracuse defense

10+ yard plays- 55th
20+ yard plays- 42nd
30+ yard plays- 68th
40+ yard plays- 122nd
50+ yard plays- 95th

How does this play out on Saturday?

“Going vertical” into a 2 deep shell is a recipe for disaster, especially with Cam. When you have the #’s advantage, you take the easy yards. 508 yards and 42 points later it worked. Jesus some of you are insufferable

7.26 yards per play, too. Which is lower than our season average but, if a team had 7.26 for this whole season, they’d be #2 in the country. Only behind……Miami at 7.59

How many times did it **** us against GT losing yards on wide receiver screens we are awful at blocking for??

Those long plays by the Syracuse defense are running plays. They're just as bad as us, if not worse.

Rushing Defense Long Plays
10+ yard plays - 82nd
20+ yard plays - 96th
30+ yard plays - 124th
40+ yard plays - 133rd
50+ yard plays - 96th

The good news is we have a really good rushing attack to capitalize on that and they are 128th in the country in rushing offense.

I love you Cam but I think Lyle may be the one to send us to the ACCCG.

Cam was dogshlt that game and he cost us that game. Missed a ton of wide open players (he’s struggle all year with accuracy downfield and ball placement) and of course playing hero ball at the worst time and fumbled. Our run game was garbage too. Defense gave up 300 yds rushing. But it was those darn screen passes. It’s CFB, every single team has bad weeks and it’s not because of WR Screens.

On offense we have some plus athletes at this level. I hope we use them. Dawson is a big a problem as Guidry. Zero creativity. Very predictable. Lyle and Lofton should have gotten 5-10 touches combined in every game. I am so down on our coordinators.

This. They have given up TEN rushing plays of 40+ yards, in 10 games. Only temple has more in the entire country.

They have not been ideal but on George's second TD last week that was a screen and he would have went a lot further if he had more turf in front of him and it was blocked well.

Dawson also uses it to set up other plays. I forget the game but it was a home game a few weeks ago, faked the WR screen, everyone was asleep and he hit Arroyo up the sideline for a huge gain. I think they have a purpose but limiting them isnt a bad idea.
