Explain this play (defense - pic)

Its hard to really tell what the coverage was based on the TV angle but if you look at that second to last picture (third to last posted, but second to last if you ignore the final one as OP instructed) you see that the motion man was being covered by a guy with his back to the QB which makes it look like some sort of man under coverage. Given the fact that the TE was wide open it seems to me that someone, probably McGee but maybe the OLB, never picked up that responsibility. Doesnt look like a flooded zone to me. If someone sees something that makes them feel different lets hear it.

It was no ones fault on that play. It was a great play call and design. BC simply used misdirection and flooded the zone. Our defenders made the correct read on that play by sticking with the deep routes.

It was one of those plays where you were caught in the wrong defense and just have to make the tackle and call it a day.

City boy knows what hes talking about sometimes..a lot of these so called busted coverages excuses are bs. The zone is vulnerable..you guys act like a zone cant be picked a part even when run right...They picked apart our zone to perfection at times even when people were in the right place..

You're right to a point. Its a catch 22 situation. If we are in Man, its prolly 30-40 yrd gains and 6pts vs the zone and 20 yrd picks up. Its really choose your poison.

For the Record - i'll admit i'm uneasy about the zone and think we should blitz more but I see my Starting Saftey looking LOST in Zone coverage - how am I suppose to feel with him in man coverage?

Not a flooded zone at all.

You have 4 UM defenders, looks like 2 LBs and 2 DBs withint 7 yeards of one another covering the short middle.

One of those, likely the SAM LB blew his resposibility and left the TE alone in the flat.

Why would McGee drop off the LOS? Give me one good reason. TE's or RBs on wheel routes aren't going to outrun him. So he should've been sealing the edge on any weakside run or looking for a TE release/route.

That pic isn't helpful you need to see the whole field. I could argue to you that this play is Buchanon's fault. Based purely on alignment, one would assume that Buchanon has either the backside TE if this is man or the backside flat if this is zone--McGee may have backside deep half or third. Buchanon got sucked into the play action by this play and Buchanon was the one running like "oh ****, that's my guy." Watch it live. I don't know 100% whose fault this play was because you can't see the whole field, but blaming McGee suggests somebody just doesn't like McGee. It's not clear that this is his responsibility.

You may be right. So it was probably 2 blown assignments.

Im not trying to pick on McGee he just looked like the culprit when he left his 3rd of the field.

Motion has killed us so far. We get very confused. Teams did this quite often during the Shannon era.

My recollection of that play was that motion did little and that what killed us was getting sucked into play action and ignoring pass responsibilities. All of our linebackers were guilty of this to the point that we had to minimize man cvg. BC used motion like so many teams to try to get us to tip our coverage. That will probably continue but we arent all that complicated anyway. What opposing oc's are really going to take away from that game is the vulnerability of our lb's.
