3rd quarter 4:30 BC with ball

The WR on short side of the field went in motion & McGee, who had responsibility for him, passes the WR off.
Now why does McGee drop off into the deep half (with a safety RIGHT behind him)?

On this play they just run a play-action, TE delay and his wide open as can be. Wouldn't McGee come close to the LOS once his man cleared to other side?
Wouldn't McGee then be playing the run, looking to seal edge, or have zone responsibility on the short side of the field?
PS: (ignore the last pic)

mcgee is a guy who seriously lacks what it takes upstairs to be a cover corner. that said, he didnt play horribly yesterday, just average, which is good for mcgee.

I noticed this during the game as well.

If they were in Cover 3 he would have dropped straight back into his respective 1/3 of the field....the fact he shaded more toward the middle of the field makes it look to me like he made a mental mistake.

If they were suppose to be in Cover 2 then the kid REALLY screwed up...he should have been zoning out alot closer to the LOS.

Either way....little doubt he blew his assignment on the play. Mcgee is a good athlete but just doesn't seem like a very "heady" player to me. His strong suit is locking down man to man where he doesn't have to think...just cover.

Goes for most So Fla CBs imo.

If Golden and D'Onofrio simplified this ish as much as possible I think we'd see this defense make improvements. They'd hit some bumps along the way (same way Reed and his class of 97 did coming up) but they'd at least show promise. I don't see any hope or potential with D'Onofrio.

We don't know what communication was echoed on the play. However, once the WR went in motion to the field side McGee would have been responsible for the number one receiver which in this case was the TE. The play looks like slot fire man under, single high.

McGee, Telemaque, Cookie, and although he tries, Green, just don't have it...what's the common link???

This. When times were good, did we not make our living playing man depending on the fact that our athletes were just simply superior? Sames goes for my favorite Dorsey throw. The Miami drag. Clear that shi out and let the athlete make the play. OP is right, we'd take some licks. But with the talent in the stable at DB, it should be an option in the near future.

I though a lot of times when bc used motion we looked a little confused and blew some assignments.

Just rewatched the game, most of their big plays were blown coverages and this was no different. Other than this I will say McGee played a pretty **** good game. He had a great tackle on a third and one in the third. He covered really well when in man. I think you will see him grade out fairly high this week. And for you guys saying Coach D is terrible you just dont really know what your talking about, he did EVERYTHING he could in this game to give guy a chance to make a play in a situation that fit their incividual skill set. He went 4 DE's a few times, he used 31 and 34 in passing downs as they are converted dbs but they got burned. He used the bigger Lbs on running downs. They mixed in all the DTs to get some live film to find out who can play, and I will tell you what that **** 91 and 93 had pretty good games. Our DE's are exactly what we thought they were, you and not explosive enough, but they will learn from the playing time and improve.

I'd argue that a reactionary style of thinking is going to get us killed. Throwing theory out of the window, we made similar mistakes over and over. It's not a matter of watching us fail and then saying "well I guess I'll try this." To really improve it's up to them to anticipate failures and not allow them to occur. As stated, I think we're going to have to simplify this defense, not figure it out. KSU is the type of team that will spin us into oblivion if we start making errors and get confused. It'll turn into a circus as guys try to compensate for others. I'd argue that they have a few days to say "hey, this is going to be a problem, let's not do it." They have to come to that game with a fairly simple plan that allows them to get to one or two critical downs per drive and win one.

It was no ones fault on that play. It was a great play call and design. BC simply used misdirection and flooded the zone. Our defenders made the correct read on that play by sticking with the deep routes.

It was one of those plays where you were caught in the wrong defense and just have to make the tackle and call it a day.

Never understood the hype on this guy. He's not at the level many people put him at and is a very average centerfielder at best.

Just need to keep getting better

I'd say your both right. As Penn said anticipation of failure in a scheme or assignment is the key to a solid gameplan, and life in general. But to Frosty'd point, they were mixing in freshman everywhere who were unproven assets besides HS film. BC was such a big win because of how much learning was done in that 60 minutes.

Saw Deon Bush make a nice stick on the quick out coming up from his safety spot. He looked pretty good overall. Finnie was on point. Saw Howard get beat a couple times. Gabe Terry with the big hit on Special team was nice. Luther Robinson had the best day on the line from what i could tell, although Pierre was always around the ball also (silly play on the punt deflection though). DP is the man. Wish we could see what Kirby could have contributed. Defense actually stepped up pretty well in the red zone a couple times. All in all, happy with the win, realize there's a long way to go!

He was a highly touted recruit who had some great flashes in his early career. Not sure wtf happened..

City boy knows what hes talking about sometimes..a lot of these so called busted coverages excuses are bs. The zone is vulnerable..you guys act like a zone cant be picked a part even when run right...They picked apart our zone to perfection at times even when people were in the right place..
