Expectations?

Need to see some premium young talent, like Stacy Coley caliber but at impactful positions like quarterback and defensive tackle.

On offense we need to attack the center of the field. In watching the bowl games and playoffs, it's increasingly obvious that confident offenses throw decisively over the middle while petrified offenses throw timidly deep down the sideline. Those are bail out plays, not much different than a long fade pass. Coordinators over value the single coverage aspect and big strike capacity of those plays in relation to the low percentage of connection. As a gambler when I need a first down on third and short or third and medium and the quarterback throws a deep sideline pass I want to scream. The success rate is next to nothing.

Notice that Andy Dalton is asked to make those throws all the time. It's one of the reasons for the Bengals' wide dispersion in results from game to game. When the opponent is terrorized and vulnerable, those plays click and the score gets out of hand. But when the opponent is competent, those deep sideline routes are flicked aside with a laugh. I attended the Dolphins/Bengals game on Thursday night this season. Dalton threw at least 4 or 5 deep sideline waste plays for seemingly no reason at all. Those plays have a greater success rate in college but the top defenses will scoff at them.

James Coley needs to work on schemes with plenty of window dressing but a basic purpose, to open up the center of the field.
