Elite recruiting classes do not always translate to W's or Why this time is different

As always I think it’s a mixture of both but I want to talk about the recruiting class hype even back then we took way more 3 stars than the elite programs took.

I think the biggest issue was QB J Harris he wasn’t even the starter right away it was Robert Marve they had a battle pretty much that entire first year and I’m not sure how things would have been different if they stuck by Marve before he transferred out. The guy even had the nickname Pickory lmao.

All those receivers we took and the most notable was Benjamin. A Johnson was a complete waste.

I have found myself perusing the recruiting board an awful lot lately, and, to my delight, we are finally recruiting at a truly elite level. A Bama/UGA level. Surely, this class will be the building block and springboard to even more elite talent next year and the year after that will surely have us competing at the highest levels of CFB.

Then, i remembered something. The pessimistic, battered canes fan inside me reminded me that we have been here before. We all remember miami's greatest recruiting class since in the internet era: the 2008 class. We all celebrated. The talent all stayed home. The question wasnt IF Jacory and the boys from 71st st would win a title, but how many!? The stars from best HS football team in the nation were all staying home to rep the orange and green. It was our time! but it wasnt. mediocrity persisted. I dont need to re hash what has transpired since then..

pessimistic, battered canes fan then reminded me that jimbo fisher and his unlimited TAMU money bought the finest recruits money could buy...and look at that dumpster fire!

BUT

Mario is not Randy Shannon and his HC deficiencies
Mario is not Jimbo Fisher and his inability to keep a locker room together and his players out of trouble

Mario has more HC experience than Randy, and a much better track record.
Mario has never had the cultural issues Jimbo has had. they arent going to start now

Dont let the distant past of just a few weeks ago and this entire past season, and virtually every season since 2004 take away from what we are experiencing in regards to recruiting. Lets enjoy this for what it is.

Are we back? that remains to be seen. I'm still pessimistic. We absolutely suck until proven otherwise, but for one more offseason, once again, this Cane is hopeful.

We are recruiting very well but not on Bama /UGA level.

We aren’t recruiting on a UGA/Bama level. We’re a notch below. We have more than twice the amount of 3 stars as they do combined. UGA has been doing this for 5+ years and Bama a decade+ years. This Mario’s first full cycle. It’ll be 5 years before the rosters are close to comparable.

the difference between this class
and any previous class we had that was ranked high is the level of talent in the trentches
our previously high classes were like floridas current class
alot of mid tier skill guys with jags in the trentches
so the overall class ranking was high but that alone did not tell the whole story
this class is fundamentally different due to the elite level Oline recruiting that this school has never had

When you raise the floor level of competition in the locker room what few non blue chippers are around could elevate based on what they see everyday at practice. Bennett from UGA comes to mind

Agree with this

Surprised you weren’t ecstatic about that 08 class tho. I was 18 at the time and just getting into following Miami recruiting. I also grew up in Miami and read the herald sports page a lot. I remember reading about what a juggernaut that MNW team was that year and then they committed to Miami. The hype was unreal. I was psyched. I thought that they’d put us right back into the spot light.

were they over hyped? Or were they poorly developed?

Poorly developed is my guess
I don't claim to know which is was of those two. I mean would A. Johnson have been an NFL guy if he'd gone elsewhere? Who knows.

It’s a combination of elite talent, elite coordinators and special quarterback play. A corch will ruin a talented team just as fast as a dud quarterback.

Texas has three top 5 classes over the last five years and has one 10 win season over that span. It’s especially bad since that 10 win season was back in 2018 before most of the kids from these classes were even enrolled. It’s not just Jimbo and ATM ruining top recruiting classes.

Over the same time period, Ohio State has probably been the third best recruiting team in the country behind Georgia and Alabama. They’ve generally been really good under Ryan Day but they’ve been curbed stomped the last two years by a Michigan team which has had one top ten class (10th in 2019) over the same time period. Right now it’s safe to say Michigan, who consistently ranks around 12th in recruiting, is the better program.

TCU hasn’t had a class better than 25th in the last five years. They beat both Texas and Oklahoma this year. Two teams who are always signing top 10 classes.

Dabo is actually recruiting better now than he did when he was winning championships. Losing coordinators coupled with poor quarterback play have made them an afterthought. Even playing in a weak conference.

The guys winning championships are either former elite coordinators or guys who hire elite coordinators.

This is by far the best O-line class probably ever at Miami. At least in the modern recruiting era.

Jimbo is a corch. Posters on this site overrated him because of the Winston era, self hate vs our own inept staffs and an inability to have logical discussions about a rival. Before Winston walked in FSU was ready to run him out of town. **** him.

@Brooklyndee is a Jimbo fan, amirite? 😎

Dumbo is a redneck version of Mandy...

From 2014 to 2021 there are 5 teams that have the highest player rating. Alabama, Ohio state, Lsu, Georgia and Clemson. Those 5 have won the national championship every year from 2014 to 2021. Thats it, thats the post.

Trying to compare Mario to Dumbo is insane.

Mario is a trench warrior, and he is all in on establishing a culture of relentlessness across the team. We all knew he was working with a mishmash of talent and major gaps even after pulling in multiple transfers. (especially OL, LB, CB, WR). We also all knew he was dependent on his coordinators to bake the ingredients into a winning cake. And as much as I hated watching games last season, I am 100% confident he will address the failure points.

Jimbo is like Mack Brown. He's not a bad coach. But he's more a salesman than an operator. He's certainly not a leader of men. Jimbo got lucky with one QB and one RB that turned him into a franchise brand. But he's hollow underneath that slick exterior.
