Kelly hasn’t been super impressive Imo he needs to improve more. That mixed with the injury history, we could definitely use another guy for the rotation. A rotation of Bain, Mesidor, Alston, and Kelly is really good. I also don’t think we’re at risk of losing Kelly if we do add a one year guy. This isn’t a top priority, but having some quality depth/ injury assurance is important.

Your memory did serve you correct, D$ did say that we are looking at a big DE (8:15 on the Nov22 Bank). Not sure if Alston fits the “Big DE” bill, but he’s good and has history with Guidry.

I'll take Alston plus the "Big DE". Depth depth depth. No such thing as having too many in the trenches.

I can’t see us taking two DEs, Kelly is still solid and has a lot of room to grow. And I think Wayne makes a play for more time. Take one to make the two deep, but let the young players battle out the rest. I like just taking Alston for DE
 
We are literally signing 4 DE a class but we are still offering transfer, guys i don’t understand

At some point, we will need attrition across the roster. I expect several more players to hit the Transfer Portal between now and end of spring.

I agree with you because there are many more variables to consider and we have other positions to think about as well. I wouldn't be opposed to taking 2 but I can see where that could be considered overkill. I was in favor of the idea in theory because we have a ton of young talent at the position plus Kelly and Mesidor can't be relied on to stay healthy for a while season. Add to that the type of player we usually get in a spot like this through the portal tend to be older experienced players who is essence are auditioning for NFL scouts.

Having said all that, you are probably right and one DE should suffice. It's not that I don't believe in the young guys like Kelly and Wayne. It's just that sometimes there's a tendency to want to go with proven experience but that can also work against you if you create an atmosphere where you never let your younger kids ride without the training wheels and I wouldn't want that. We have a serious influx of elite talent coming in and a good amount returning and that talent needs an opportunity to develop so let's develop these kids. It's year three for Kelly so I actually expect him to really start to come into his own. It's year two for Wayne and he showed some promise as a freshman so similarly I expect him to take the next step as well. Just for fun, let's breakdown what we have at DE

Messidor
Bain
Kelly
Wayne
Lightfoot
Rudolph
McConathy
Alston ???

That's a really solid 2 deep especially if Kelly and Wayne both take the next step. Lightfoot is an EE so he has a shot of contributing as a true freshman. McConathy also has an opportunity at early pt but I don't know his enrollment status. With Rudolph I think it's safe to say that between his grade issues and shoulder injury he most likely will be redshirting this season assuming he makes it in. I think a guy like Alston fits perfectly in this situation. He can come in and immediately begin to vie for playing time. At worst I see Alston being a 3rd down pash rushing specialist. At best he takes Kelly's job for the year.

Kelly doesn’t look twitchy enough. Idk what’s wrong with him maybe thinking too much or injured just seemed odd

Yea I agree I gotta watch the Marshall kids tape. We need a twitchy edge for 3rd downs to get off the field this year idk if this kid is that he could be I gotta watch

Which is weird because I remember him being super twitch on his HS tape. Has to be injuries, no? Maybe another offseason of S&C will make a huge difference. ... But yeah, bring in Alston to fill out the rotation and provide injury insurance.

I think we're well into the 90s in terms of current and incoming scholarship players. So 15+ have to go to make room for 5+ more from the portal and maybe even 1-2 late HS commits.

We still need a QB1, WR1, Safety (or two) and CB, 2 if the Browns hit the portal. Plus looks like we're going after a DE.
