Why does every thread have to turn into a bashing thread?
Why can't some of you just admit Duke is a better football team than you want to give them credit for?
And I laugh at the constant referencing of recruiting rankings, there are dozens of teams that perform better than they recruit.
Thats 100% right. They are a better team. The problem is they were coached into being a better team from a bunch of 2 and 3 star recruits. Our player development sucks right now.
Rankings don't mean anything, when half those guys are not here. BTW, what are our rankings minus those recruits, in the Golden era? That is the real issue, but hey don't let facts get in your way. Duke is a good team and they have recruited guys to fit their philosophy.
Teams lose players all the time. Sure we lost more than the average team would, but its not like every teams recruiting class all stays till their senior year. With that said, even with the players that left, do you think our recruiting class falls lower than Dukes? Rankings don't mean that much as they are a paper stat, but if our recruiting is on par with Duke's (considering the players that left), then at the very least we should have been coached to their same level, but it's obvious right now they arefar better than us right now.
I stand by my statement that it seems like players are not developing. Perryman might be the only one since Golden got here that has made significant gains since his freshman year.
Instead of saying teams lose players all the time, go research which players Duke has lost. Miami has lost 4 and 5 star recruits, which would significantly bring down our rating. Add that to a smaller class, and it could be a toss up with the rankings. Don't worry, I'll wait.
Ok so I looked. Using 2011-2013 (Al's time here) Duke has not lost much and I never said they lost a lot (all I said is that teams lose players - go back and read what I wrote), but they also didn't sign as many as we did to begin with, so players leaving for playing time are less likely. Odds are Duke does not recruit players who won't meet their academic standard like Miami does only to watch them not make it to campus, but this is an assumption. There's also a good chance Duke also does not go after retards who get in trouble all the time like Miami does which was a fair portion of our cuts, another assumption, but I won't use assumptions as fact. With that said....
2011 - Duke 77 ranked 20 recruits signed. Lost 3 players that were 3 stars (I'll remind you 3 stars are their best recruits). Obviously we don't know what the ranking is after these losses, but I'd be willing to bet that 77 ranking drops somewhere closer to the 90's or worse.
Miami - 36 ranked (worse class we've had in 10 years or more). 16 recruits signed. Lost 7 - 6 3 stars (Finnie, Paul, Eddie Johnson, and Grooms were all cut by Golden, 2 more Ricardo Williams and Antonio Kinard also gone.) Only 1 4 star (Jalen Grimble). Odds are with those losses we drop close to Duke's ranking. This leaves them with 8 3 stars vs our 6, but we also have Chick who was a 4 star (5 star on some sites).
2012 - Duke 52 ranked lost noone. 20 recruits signed. 1 4 star Shaq Powell was the highest recruit. All others were 3.
Miami - 9th ranked. 33 total recruits signed. We lost 10. Before I say any of them, we still signed more recruits and our class would easily have been ranked better. We lost 8 3 stars and 2 4 star. The 4 star was Robert Lockhart who transferred and likely would not have seen the field yet (no impact as of right now is what I'm getting at). The other was Angelo Jean Louis. The 3 stars were (Jawand Blue, Briscoe, Jontavious Carter, Ivery, Dillard, Terry, Witt, David Thompson). Carter and Thompson likely would not have seen the field and Thompson went to play baseball.
Even with losing this many, we still signed 5 4 stars and 2 5 stars, plus nearly as many 3 stars as they have recruits.
2013 - Duke rank 68. 20 recruits signed. lost 1 3 star.
Miami - 20 ranked. 18 recruits signed. Lost 3 players. 1 4 star (Derrick Griffin WR - grades and may likely return after Juco) and 2 3 stars (Devontae Bond and Rhyheem Lockley). We still signed 8 4 stars. This was the year we didn't offer as many scholarships as a preemptive for NCAA. We still only signed 4 less and still signed as many 4 stars as half of their total class.
So I ask you, who are all these great 4 and 5 star players you claim we lost. 3 total 4 stars lost over 3 years. That's it. I said we had lost enough that our rankings should be at least on par with Duke's in recruiting, but as I look at it now, even with the losses, we should still be higher than them. The only year our ranking might be bad enough to be on par with them is 2011. In total Duke signed 60 and lost 4. Miami signed 67 and lost 19 5 of which were offensive players who likely would not have seen the field this year (unless you think Lockhart, Thompson, Dillard, Grooms, and Griffin were going to make any significant value this year). 56 players signed and kept at Duke vs 48 at Miami. I don't think 6 less total players is going to create that big of an impact in depth vs Duke, especially when we recruited what were supposed to be far better players.
So keep telling me about how Duke does not do a far better job at developing their players.
