Overall, came out looking decent with the run game then started looking flat after the 3rd series. Need to start playing 4 whole quarters instead of just a half of football. We can't rely on luck the entire season. Cam tried to play hero ball and the Oline did not do the best job of picking up the pressure. Here's my thoughts on the individual players.

Cam
Tried to play hero ball from 3rd series on. Wish he would always hustle like he did on the rushing TD he had. Took a terrible sack with 43 seconds left in the 2nd to take us out of field goal range. Held the ball too long in the 2nd quarter. Defense comes back out and has a very solid 3 and out. Cam with his head still up his ***, holds the ball too long goes to the sideline tries to throw across his body but in a lackadaisical effort floats it like a punt. Pick 6. Canes down 28-10. Thankfully, starts pulling his head out of his *** in the 3rd and then fully pulls it out in the 4th and puts on his cape to show me the biggest comeback I remember seeing in Canes history. He's quicker than you think. He's also elite 👀
35/53, 437 Yds, 8.2 Avg, 2 TD, 1 INT, 6 Car, 15 Yds, 1 Rushing TD
Martinez
OK runs. Solid in short runs when needing the 1st or a short TD. Also had a couple nice catches especially the the one that helped sealed the victory on a 23 yard completion on 3 & 20 to put us at the 3 yard line. Average game. Expected more from him this season. Still a lot of football left though.
12 Car, 42 Yds, 3.5 Avg, 1 TD, 4 Rec, 51 Yds, 12.8 Avg
Fletcher
Great runs on 2nd series. Ran angry every time he touched the ball. TD.
11 Car, 81 Yds, 7.4 Avg, 1 TD
Brown
Bobbled screen pass while JG gets pushed back right into him very early in the 1st. Soft player. I don't know who's softer him or JG.
4 Rec, 43 Yds, 10.8 Avg
Restrepo
Phenomenal, dog, Mr. Relaible, superhero. After a "drop" with 5:43 left in the while trying to continue the comeback, sets up 4th & 5 which we immediately make 4th & 10 due to a false start, Cam goes right back to him on a beautiful throw where X leaps and glides past the 1st down marker with both hands on the ball. Definition of strong hands. 77 yards wide open that sets up the dagger
7 Rec, 163 Yds, 23.3 Avg
Jacolby George
More boneheaded dumb ****. Easily baited into an unsportsmanlike killing the momentum in the 1st half. Wish he would get north and south quicker. Drops too many passes. He seems to be good for at least one drop per game. May be the softest player on the team. It's a shame because he has the talent but plays soft. Lets the ball come to him and tries to gingerly receive it instead of using strong hands to catch and secure the ball.
5 Rec, 59 Yds, 11.8 Avg
Horton
I like this dude. Having a great season so far. Need to start him over JG. Beautiful pick play to free Restrepo on the critical 2 pt conversion. Beautiful back to back catches in the middle of the 4th. First catch, Brown is called on an extremely bull**** offensive PI, goes back to the exact same play to the exact same player who finds himself in the endzone to start what would be 21 unanswered game winning points.
9 Rec, 83 Yds, 9.2 Avg, 1 TD
Lofton
Beautiful catch on a fantastic throw from Cam early in the 4th. Immediately goes to sideline holding his hip. Look like it's just a stinger came back later in the game as a FB. This dude has potential for days.
1 Rec, 24 Yds, 24 Avg
Arroyo
Dawson called up a decent play on the decision to go for it on 4th down. Safety diagnosed it from the jump and made a textbook play. Arroyo never even had a chance to turn up field. Game winning TD reception for the young man. Loved that he was able to fight, extend the ball past the goal line. Selfishly want him back next year but he may be playing himself into a 3rd round+ draft pick.
3 Rec, 14 Yds, 4.7 Avg, 1 TD
McCormick
Useless. Lets the defender run by him untouched after the Martinez 1st down late in the 4th quarter to tackle Martinez at the 5.

Defense

Ew. This defense stinks and stinks badly. They're the most infuriating part of this team. Killers on the Dline but if the Dline can't get home well, we saw what happens. Guidry NEEDS to do something about it. Too many bad fundamentals and undisciplined plays. In just 4 plays Cal was able to put up 230 yards of offense 🤮
He seems to adjust well in the 2nd half but that's nowhere near good enough to be sustainable. I don't know what's up but he needs to rethink this defense like he did last year. Safeties have been responsible for what seems to be 700+ yards and 10 TDs the past 3 games. It's nauseating. Anyway, here are the players:

OJ Frederique
Unnoticeable to the average fan. Wouldn't even know he's on the field (in the best way possible), exactly what you want from your boundary CB. Not sure he was even targeted. Dude is special so far and hope he continues that development. Hidden gem of the last recruiting class.
Porter
Solid
Hill
Solid
Bain
Dude plays with a great motor, glad to see him back.
Baron
Tackled by Cal's Oline all game love his effort. Had a bad face mask penalty in the 4th trying to make a play on the QB.
Barrow
A sack and a couple tackles for loss
Mesidor
Mostly invisible along with most of the defensive line for the first 2.5 to 3 quarters. Makes a possible game winning shoestring tackle to prevent a 19 yard run from turning into another 50+ yard failure on the defense with 4 minutes left to play on Cal's penultimate possession.
Meesh
Another horrible showing by him. terrible job on the 2nd 51 yard reception to put them at the 4. Beat like a drum on that play. Terrible safety play again this game. 2-3+ missed tackles by him alone
Harris
Terrible. Horrible. Disgusting. Why is he playing? Struggles to tackle. Easily fooled, terrible decisions, horrible angles, late on the communication leaving Hill high and dry on the 1st 57 yard TD. And what do you know Harris on another terrible angle gets his diving shoestring tackle broken easily by Ott who walks into the endzone. bad all around. He's also slow like most of our DBs. And what do you know 9:36 in the 3rd quarter on a long 3rd and 15 a screen pass is dumped off and our ****tiest player on the field does his successfully ****** impression of himself taking a terrible angle and whiffs on an easy tackle Meesh follows suit 20 yards downfield. Another 56 yard completion on ****** DB playing and **** poor effort.
Kiko
Had another bad game. Got picked on. Over pursued and took bad angles all game, missed easy tackles due to it. Only had 2-3 tackles all game. Need him to step up he is better than what he has been showing. Just needs to show some patience and discipline. back 7 had a terrible game. Fully exposed. He did have the game sealing INT though.
Bissanthe
Like this dude. Had a solid game. Big hit on Cal's QB to give us the ball back setting up the game winning drive.
Agguire
Defense sold TF out to stop the 4th and 1 completely ignored the RB who easily walks 66 yards into the end zone (Yes, I know he stepped out of bounds). Seemed like it was maybe his assignment and decided to blitz instead.

Special Teams

Didn't do anything to hurt us. Punted well. And were perfect on PATs and FGs.

Ray Ray
Too unsure as a punt returner doesnt doesn't always make the right desicion. Lacks the vision to know where defense is at and will fair catch balls that are returnable. However, I guess I'll take that over what we've had with the ****** muffed punts of multiple years past.
Borregales
is automatic
Joyce
Punting is extremely solid good leg.

We also had way too many "drops" this game. I put it in quotes because everything that touched the receivers hands but fell to the floor is what I consider a "drop" but not all are equal. I counted 10 which is probably 7 too many:

1 - Horton had an ugly drop in the begging of the 2nd quarter where Cam delivered a great ball. Hits him in his breadbasket but he just lets it fall through. Need to high point the ball or show some strength and take it.
2 - JG drops a long dart from Cam. Probably softest player on the team. Shame because he has the talent but plays soft. Lets the ball come to him and tries to catch it gingerly instead of using strong hands
3 - Brown Drops an easy catch right after Cam's dumb sack hits hand right in both hands and he drops it (No, it was not a bad throw) which would've put us back into FG range.
4 - Damien Martinez poor throw by Cam after he held it too long
5 - Fletcher another poor throw by Cam after holding it too long again but Fletcher needs to help Cam and catch that ball.
6 - JG again. Very similar to Horton's drop. Copy and paste actually. Yes, it wouln't have counted due to the penalty but it's an easy catch.
7 - Riley Williams. Bullet fired by Cam right off his hands need to catch that especially givern the circumstances trying to mount a come back down 20 points in the 4th
8 - Jojo Trader. Hard to really put this on him Ward throws 2 yards behind him. Possibly some miscommunication on what he was supposed to run. Put more effort into it than Brown or JG though.
9 - Restrepo. Bad throw high and behind from Cam on an extremely crucial 3 & 5 while trying to continue the comeback with 5:30 to go. Don't really consider this a drop as much as a bad throw. Sets up 4 & 5 where we immediately make 4 & 10 due to a false start.
10 - Brown :47 seconds left to play 2 & 20 after another extremely bull**** unsportmanlike on Horton, Ward fires it to Brown but it is behind him. Looks to hit off his right hand or the DBs helmet hard to tell since they didn't show a replay on this. Hard to call this a drop per se but don't like Brown's effort or lack thereof overall.

Mesidor was worlds better inside against the run this week than last. Props to him; he's sacrificing a lot playing inside nice to see him perform better there and make some big plays at the end of the game.

One of the most schizo defensive performances I've seen. We gave up 7 plays of 20+ yards for 292 yards (41.7 YPP). They ran 42 other plays and gained 78 yards (1.9 YPP).

If George and Brown can ever get consistently going - oh my - with this offense.

Cam's two pass to the end zone, I believe Horton and George would have been touchdowns if they high pointed the ball instead of waiting for it to drop in their laps. Cal's DB's were able to get their hands in the catch attempts.
The drops were almost as frustrating as the defense giving up their long plays.

This defensive performance was giving me flashbacks to the UNC game with Diaz at the helm :toad:

You talk crap and mouth off all night there you have it.

It's amazing to see how badly the secondary is playing compared to the opener. I know UF isn't great offensively but they're probably pretty equal to VT and Cal in terms of skill position players. The first 3 games they played really fundamental football as far as angles and tackling. I don't know what's happened there. Jaden Harris isn't slow, in fact he clocks very fast. He was injured last week and I wonder if it's lingering. Meesh is better than he's been playing. Don't know if it's physical or psychological. Our corners are average but playing okay. Kiko is definitely in a funk the last 2 weeks. Everyone on defense is playing undisciplined it seems in terms of eye candy. Almost to Diaz era levels. Despite all that we won the last 2 weeks thanks to Cam's late heroics.

I said it in another thread but if things don't change the defense costs us at least 3 games this season.
