Do we play bend-don't-break on defense again this year?

Just roll the corners up and let's all pray we find ways to create pressure. In addition, we have got to tackle better as a unit.

I mean sure if the pass rush and CBs are good enough, otherwise that is a recipe for disaster.

It is the same recipe coach D used towards the latter part of last season. As **** poor our as pass rush and corners were, the defense started improving when coach D rolled up the corners and took away those quick perimeter passes. The next step going forward is to find ways to create pressure and turnovers.

We will continue the methodical approach on the defensive side of the ball, but we simply can't give the perimeter away. One factor this is never talked about is the positioning of the collegiate hash marks. The positioning of the hashmarks is such that the game is played a lot on the perimeter, particularily the wide side of the field. Can't give that away by playing too much off coverage whether it be 3 or 4.

We need to be more aggressive. We have better personnel in the secondary even though they're young, so we better get after the QB more this year.

I'm not going to deny we played "bend-don't-break". I do think there is something to be said for a defense that is somewhat limited in various aspects to look better when the opposing offense has a reduced a field. Especially, if the oppositions play calling is not exactly stellar itself. I suspect the defense will be more aggressive in year 2 and improve between the 40's.

Yep. Playing ten yards behind the recievers turned bad offenses into juggernauts, and bad, non quarterbacks into Hiesmans.

Southpawcane,

What'd he run at Temple that has you excited?

The few games I watched of Temple under Golden looked the same as us last year (CBs 7 yards off the ball... LBs making NO contact with TEs in route, etc)
I think ultimately they want to rush 4 and get pressure (who wouldn't)... but what are we doing with the back 7? Zone? Bump and run?

I agree last year was a makeshift defense and props to D'Onofrio because it did work (top 20 scoring D).
I guess we'll find out a lot at BC if it's same story different year or D'Onofrio has more confidence in the defense.

Golden/D'Onofrio probably had similar talent on those Temple teams compared to last year's team in the Secondary, so that would explain the similarities.

This CB group is probably the best they have ever had to work with overall since they've been at Temple.

Miami running the same D as Temple is more a sad commentary on the state of Miami talent-wise in the secondary last year.

Temple's talent in relation to the talent found in the rest of the conference wasn't bottom of the barrel. The bend but don't break style is one thing even Temple fans complained about when it comes to our DC. I'm all in on Golden. The DC needs to show what he's got. He's got tools to work with this year.

Man yall are unbvelieveable...Onofrio is gahbage..Did you not here the temple fans complaining? If we play a spread team we are playing bend but dont break thats his philsophy..stop putting your heads in the sand..Lets just pray have faith and hope it works better than it did last year

Don't look now but Saban went 6-6 his first season and his defense was sketchy.

When we played teams "Lousiville" that spread it around in Randy's old 4-3 Tampa Cover 2 we got our asses handed to us. At least Coach D will use a 3-4 to slow it down. And what Temple fans out of the 2,000 total did you bump into who knew anything football?

His defenses at Temple went from dead last to like 15th.

Where were they supposed to be ranked?

With the CB's we had if we had played press it would've just been long completion after long completion. That wouldn't help either.

Since when did press man and blitzing become some kind of magic elixir that fixes bad defenses?

If a team sees Mike Williams playing press man, the ball is going over his head for a big gain.

Naw man, it's the coaches fault. If we would've played man and blitzed more, our defense would've been way better. I know because I do it on NCAA 13 all the time and I kick ***. Get yo head outta yo *** fool.

Any team coached by Bobby Petrino is going to put up points against most teams they face. Need to also point out the offense fumbling in the red zone and two FGs missed all in the 1st half by us. As for the scheme - up to the coach to put guys in a position to make the play and up to the player to actually make it. The big TD passes they got were off missed tackles by our DBs. 15-20 yards pass turns into a 50 yarders if the safety and/or CB can't make the tackle. And most of the time cover 2's don't allow the big play - 2 safeties helping over the top make completing deep passes tough unless the safety just was really slow getting over or had pressure down the seam keeping him from getting to the sideline. Didn't most people think Shannon's defense was too conservative? Seemed like most people wanted more blitzing from it.

and our DC's defense didn't slow down anything when other teams attacked. How fast did VT score when it needed to? UNC? We have guys 10 yards off all game against MD and decide to press coverage with a CB who just the play before came back in the game after sitting at least a quarter with a cramp? With no safety help over the top either? I was in the stands calling that play out loud - "**** mcghee in press with no help? Maryland's gotta test him." My boy was looking at me like why did i jinx him. But it was such an obvious play for Maryland to do. Not sure how you leave him out there like that.

I wanted more press but without the blitzing - our basic cover 2. It's like the play that Kacy Rodgers blew against FSU. Even though Chambers whiffed it still forced the QB to try to fit the ball into a tighter window and it should have been an INT. Rodgers blew it but it wasn't cause we were in press with 2 safeties over the top. He was in position to make the play because of that. He just nutted up on the play.

that's why i wanted press cover 2. with all the mediocre QBs we faced forcing them to actually make good throws down the field probably would have been too much for them. Just weren't very good. Now we play off and its pitch and catch. Lots of easy throws for them to complete - then they start getting confident and its over. If we get beat cause the other QB/WR made a good play that's better than just allowing them to get easy yards. It's also why we didn't get many INTs. no pressure on the QB to force a throw when his WRs got a ton of cushion. Then when we did play press, most of the time its in zero coverage - no safety help. It's either 10 yards off with safeties also back or press coverage with no safety help. hardly got anything in between.

Okay but Randy got lambasted for playing press cover 2. People said it was too stale and predictable. A crappy cover 2 man defense is susceptible to RBs out of the backfield, TEs (especially down the seam), and crossers if the DBs aren't communicating. You can also get beat over the top if the safeties bite on underneath stuff (which Ray Ray was most certainly prone to do).

There is no perfect defense.

The main thing we need to do is get impact guys who play with speed and confidence.

If the d-line wins up front and the back 7 plays smart assignment football and everyone tackles well, just about any defense will be successful.

I think we need to do the fundamental things better (controlling gaps, shedding blocks, maintaining zone responsibility, gang-tackling, etc...) before we can really worry about the scheme.

Would you guys have felt confident leaving Mike Williams, Lee Chambers and Brandon McGee on an island last year?

Yeah, me neither.

Yea we tried that and each time it burned us! slant td the other team! guy was worked with something like 8 different starting line-ups last year. moving players from one position to another, we will not have to do that this year. player gets hurt another one from that position steps up - truly next man up!

also what great offense's did we face last year in the ACC no less....NONE!! OSU was a joke with its frosh QB...FSU /VT/UNC qbs are garbage yes garbage...if we would have played any top team with a balanced attack we would been toasted......it was purely play to not get beat bad last year..
