For those who know, is there are typical yardage from the line of scrimmage where they're suppose to line up? I watched our guys line up at least 5 yards off the ball. Then I watched where VT played their guys and LSU and Bama too. Seemed that these other defenses had their guys a little closer to the line, more in the 4 yard range. Sometimes even 3.5 or 3 yards off the ball.
Playing further off the ball has several disadvantages: 1. on wide running plays, our lbs have to run further to get to the ball carrier and/or meet him further down the field after the rb turns the corner. 2. once our lbs diagnose a play as a run, they have further to go to reach the line of scrimmage and fill gaps. That means the opposing oline can just focus on the dl and it makes it easier for olinemen to move to the second level and pick off our lbs. 3. longer to run on blitzes and it gives the ol more time to see these guys coming.
