DL Recruiting 2019

1. I strongly agree that Richt is thinking long term, particularly about using the state of Georgia to address the type of line players we don't see much in South Florida.
2. I strongly disagree with the "eh, we can always hit it next year" mentality. That is particularly true for OL and DL as they are seldom immediate contributors. You have to have depth, and be developing them in S&C, as they are unlikely to be plug and play guys.

There are serious problems with skipping a position on the theory that you'll just hit it hard next cycle. Fist, it throws off your numbers to have half a position group in the same class...what happens when they all graduate/leave for the NFL at the same time? Also, next cycle isn't promised. Nothing says you'll get those guys next year, and what then? You take 1 kid this year planning on taking 4 next year and strike out with 2 of your top guys...now you have to take 2 JAGS just to have bodies. This is my concern at LB right now. We didn't take enough guys last year to leave room for this year...now we'll end up with too many guys in the same class, and/or some JAGS.

It's basically a loser mentality. Winners get the guys they want today and tomorrow.

His "panties aren't all twisted up", in fact he literally said in the post that he's not.

That's the problem with some of yall, always on the defensive to the point where nothing can ever be discussed.

Its not a crime to ask questions & OP is a solid poster who isn't trolling or trying to bash the staff. It happens every class, people ask legit questions all year & are constantly attacked because of it, then come NSD everyone is left wondering why we didn't get certain prospects.

I believe we'll have a great DLine haul this class & have faith Coach Simpson will get it done, but there's nothing wrong with trying to get a clearer picture of what's the current temperature on the crootin trail.

Not saying this in regard to Lex, because he's usually level headed, but there are many on here that are flat out stans that impede any critical, analytical, or expository discussion this team, its recruiting, or the staff in general. They NEVER have anything productive to even discuss. Its a shame. When there is a real discussion to be had, it comes off the rails early in the thread with people that don't have a clue.

I think DL recruiting is a legitimate topi of concern. I laid out plenty of posts last cycle that show how behind we are in the arms race. For many, the excuse was Kuligowski. Rightfully so. A few months into the tenure of a new DL coach, I think its only fair to discuss what he is doing. Obviously, the focus on Georgia line players is evident from the articles and interest, but we haven't seen it pay dividends yet...and after three months, I think its fine to ask when we will first start to see it, as this cycle requires us to overrecruit the position.

Seems like a lot of our targets on the DL are going to go through the entire recruiting process before they commit anywhere. However I do agree that having just 2 committed right now, one of which there are rumors he is looking around, is a bit concerning at a position most agree we need to take 6-7 guys. If we win like we did last year I expect some to pull the trigger.

Fair question about DT recruiting. I think we'll have a clear picture by fall. Simpson will need some time to build recruiting relationships with the young men we are pursuing. Be mindful, top talent often has the same coach in their ear for multiple years. Obviously, it won't take him two or more years to bring in talent, but unless a kid was already coming to us no matter what, I wouldn't expect us to really know where we stand until end of Summer or early Fall or maybe even later if kids hold out for NSD rather than the early signing period. Unlike our last DT coach, Simpson is hungry and seems to be more of a people person. The fact that he's been around elite high school kids and developed those kids and dealt with their families should all help him with recruiting, especially in Georgia.

My priorities are always DL and OL because that is always the engine of the team. In addition to Williams and Daxon - a class including Ingraham, Sorrells and or Davis would cast Simpson in a better light. Fall back Ga linemen will not do it.

Simpson doing work wether you know it or not his roots are deep here in GA. Honestly this was a power move. Just sit back and let the man put in work.

Agree. You need talent up front, especially on the Dline, to challenge the elite in college football. With tempo these days and guys jumping early to the NFL, you need depth every year. There is no taking recruiting cycles off in the trenches.

this dude lexcane is pure clown.

Yes. We need 3 DE and 3 DTs this year to get our depth up. Maybe a JUCO as well.

I'd go with 7 and wouldn't say no to a superstar 8th. That said, if McCloud moves to DE or some of the '19 OLB kids are going to grow into DE/Jacks then 6 kids will do. I'd like to see us with 4 commits but we did just see a decommit at DT in Brown. As others have mentioned, DE is the bigger concern especially with Joe Jackson as a potential 4th departure leaving us with 3 returning DE. One thing is for sure, this staff isn't concerned about COACHING an athlete into a position. Garvin (raw), Greg ("project"), Deejay (DB to WR to RB), Redwine (to S)... we have coaches so I'm good with taking some projects that have the athletics to play.
