I definitely am not happy with D'Onofrio's schemes, but here is a little sample of the Defensive Line. Yes, everything looks better in hindsight, but this is just meant to show that veteran talent is severely lacking on the line.
Let's take a look at some of the top contributors on the line...
Out of High School
DE Shayon Green- Low 3* with 4-5 D1 offers, converted 220 Linebacker... size isn't the issue with him now, but because of all the weight he has gained, he lost the speed off the edge..below average player
DT Olsen Pierre- low 3*, former TEMPLE commit and that was one of his only options. Has had to gain about 20 pounds to make the shift inside to DT
DT Darius Smith- Unranked out of community college and Miami was the ONLY school that offered him. Came in at about 345 pounds and needed to lose severe weight.
DE Kelvin Cain- a 2* undersized converted linebacker, had two other D1 offers out of high school... He still isn't big enough to play with his hand on the ground as a pass-rusher and gets pushed around at the point of attack
3 of those 4 are considered "starters"...
I'm not a stars guy, but if you're gonna take a chance on somebody, do it with a south Florida kid. I'm leaving Corey King off the list because he doesn't play, but he should NEVER have been offered either
Now onto the highly-rated guys:
DE Anthony Chickillo-obviously a big-time prospect, 4* with offers from everybody... I haven't given up on him whatsoever, but he's above average at best at this point of his career
DT Jalen Grimble-There's a reason he fell into our laps from USC so easily. USC gave him to us because they saw the writing on the wall with him. Can't blame the staff for taking a chance on him because it was a big deal to get a 4* kid from the West Coast, but it's evident that he is somebody who could be gone after this season
DT Luther Robinson- Do I need to say anything here? Everyone knows the drama with him from this week. Average player, wouldn't have made a difference in today's game whatsoever...4* kid out of high school
I will reserve judgement on the Young guys (Moore, McCord, Hamilton, Briscoe), but at a certain point we have to realize that almost every single one of these guys are JAGs. Coaching is a part of the equation, but Recruiting the DL position should be the priority for this point forward.
