DL Perspective

It doesn't matter what level of talent they are when they're asked to engage, play gap scheme, and have guys spot drop behind them. They may suck, but I've seen Mississippi State teams with similar talent look entirely different because they lived and died by the attack. At least put up a mother****ing fight.

Agree 100%. Our scheme is only accentuating our deficiency. That's not what u pay a coach to do. Its as of he has thrown up his hands and is saying "I've got no talent. Poor me"

I'm not a coach, but good coaches find ways to cover their holes. He has not done that in 14 games.

Last year we had no corners...this year we have no dts......give me a break.

I haven't once heard Golden make an excuse for **** poor players. In fact he goes out of his way to drill it into the Miami media and his own team that we expect you to play now and to play well.

So is golden recruiting poorly at the DT position or is he just settling cause there hasn't been anyoneelf quality he could have pulled?

He had to scrape together whatever he could get in 2011. He had less than two months to pull that together.

He brought in 3 DTs in 2012 who seem promising, but they're still true freshmen.

We're probably bringing in 3 more DTs this year. It's going to take time. There was no upperclassman talent there.

Forston, Ojomo, Vernon.

Washington, Miller, Streeter.

Armstrong

This team could look a lot different. Last season and this season are like probation already. Our DL cannot become strong enough overnight and when the offense does nothing or messes up it amplifies the defensive problems. Which is basically the difference in the first two games. Everyone knew we had to score and score to make this a game. When we turned it over, dropped passes and failed in the redzone, it was basically like taking away the lube.

Calling Robinson a 4 star is awfully generous, much like calling Rodgers a 4 star is.

Robinson didnt have offers from all of the Big 3.

How u feel bout Ricardo Williams Pete?

He will be better than mccord

You serious, Clark?

Yep...for now. Obviously, we've seen little of both. But, for all the hype that McCord gets, I was very underwhelmed with what I've seen from scrimmage/practice clips. I don't think he's that good....period. Jag.

I have even less to base my Ricardo opinion on but from what I've seen of him in HS, he's a much more natural for that undersized rush end spot. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

I will respectfully, completely disagree. McCord has a great frame (no homo).

I definitely am not happy with D'Onofrio's schemes, but here is a little sample of the Defensive Line. Yes, everything looks better in hindsight, but this is just meant to show that veteran talent is severely lacking on the line.

Let's take a look at some of the top contributors on the line...

Out of High School
DE Shayon Green- Low 3* with 4-5 D1 offers, converted 220 Linebacker... size isn't the issue with him now, but because of all the weight he has gained, he lost the speed off the edge..below average player

DT Olsen Pierre- low 3*, former TEMPLE commit and that was one of his only options. Has had to gain about 20 pounds to make the shift inside to DT

DT Darius Smith- Unranked out of community college and Miami was the ONLY school that offered him. Came in at about 345 pounds and needed to lose severe weight.

DE Kelvin Cain- a 2* undersized converted linebacker, had two other D1 offers out of high school... He still isn't big enough to play with his hand on the ground as a pass-rusher and gets pushed around at the point of attack

3 of those 4 are considered "starters"...

I'm not a stars guy, but if you're gonna take a chance on somebody, do it with a south Florida kid. I'm leaving Corey King off the list because he doesn't play, but he should NEVER have been offered either

Now onto the highly-rated guys:

DE Anthony Chickillo-obviously a big-time prospect, 4* with offers from everybody... I haven't given up on him whatsoever, but he's above average at best at this point of his career

DT Jalen Grimble-There's a reason he fell into our laps from USC so easily. USC gave him to us because they saw the writing on the wall with him. Can't blame the staff for taking a chance on him because it was a big deal to get a 4* kid from the West Coast, but it's evident that he is somebody who could be gone after this season

DT Luther Robinson- Do I need to say anything here? Everyone knows the drama with him from this week. Average player, wouldn't have made a difference in today's game whatsoever...4* kid out of high school

I will reserve judgement on the Young guys (Moore, McCord, Hamilton, Briscoe), but at a certain point we have to realize that almost every single one of these guys are JAGs. Coaching is a part of the equation, but Recruiting the DL position should be the priority for this point forward.

Pete, thanks for posting this, I appreciate the work you put in on the site, very insight. After the last two games, I'm hearing a bunch of excuses! This is the kind of outcomes we got with Randy and his revolving door, staff wise. when we hired Al, the one area I knew would be a strong point is our defense, broght the whole staff from Temple, but ****!

Can't take anybody seriously judging our talent level based on the stars our players had in HS.

We've been there, done that and had classes that were loaded with players that had a bunch of stars and we've still sucked. **** is meaningless
This.Quit with the excuses. Other teams with low rated players manage to execute.

This, this, and more of this.

I have to admit Coach Shannon left Golden in a ****ed up situation. To make matters worse Frio read and react or bend but don't break scheme makes our defense look even worse. I wish UM had the money to hire big time coaches. Great coaches do more with less and improvise, adapt and overcome. They don't bend but don't break!!! I didn't realize that we would miss the guys that left early this much!

Whats the word on Earl Moore, Jacoby Briscoe and Dequan Ivery?

We are in big trouble for the next 2-3 years if these guys can't play.

This may sound nuts, but one guy can improve this defense materially. That one guy is Curtis Porter. I may have better luck getting lunch with Steve Jobs than him getting healthy, but he can be a difference maker. Doesn't make the defense good, but improves it materially.

That may be true, but from what I've seen, he doesn't play like it. Ricky, otoh, also has a great frame as well. 6-5, 235 edge rusher as a RS FR is solid to build upon.

/love talking frames
