Did we need a game like this to happen?

You don't NEED to lose a football game, ever. But it's REALLY hard to win every single one you play (hence the reason maybe 1 team does every single year), so if/when you do lose one, it's nice when it doesn't impact your season in the least bit. We all wanted to beat UiF (check), beat fsu (check), make it to Charlotte (win the next 2 and you're there), win the ACC (win in Charlotte after winning the next 2 and we win this godforsaken league finally), and make the playoffs (gotta win the ACC now to do this, most likely, but see path above).

Disappointing result on Saturday. Doesn't change the target one iota.

Get healthy and rested over the bye week. Go beat the **** out of Wake, fly to Syracuse and beat the **** out of them in the dome, and it's Charlotte time.

I know, Miami couldn't beat SMU in 100 tries. They're 85 superheroes over there. But, I had this WILD *** dream a few nights ago. In it, SMU was outplayed by a team named "Duke", and needed massive special teams errors by the "Duke" ballclub to win a game that went to overtime. I don't know what'd happen if Miami played this Duke team, but I know there's no chance Miami would win by 20+ points, so I know SMU will likely injure and possibly kill many of our players were were to get infinitely lucky and beat Wake Forest and Syracuse. But I'm gonna go totally off the wall here and just wait to see what happens before I say our program should be shuttered.

Agreed on those QBs - which is why I am just not sure we win VT, Cal and Louisville -- which would have been a wheels coming off part of the season, etc.

It's a hypothetical that's impossible to determine. This offense probably isn't as prolific but perhaps in key, situational situations, it's more consistent rather than the all or nothing we seem to get every game with Cam.

Why is this board so obsessed with hypotheticals that "if we didn't have good players, we'd be bad" ???

No ****?

If you take Dillon Gabriel off of Oregon, do they beat Taint? You took Harold Perkins off the LSU defense, look how much they suck. Is Boise the national darling if they have Don Chaney instead of Ashton Jeanty? If Shadeur Sanders is implicated in the Diddy scandal, you think Colorado makes the playoffs? WTF are we doing here, honestly?

This game is about GOOD FOOTBALL PLAYERS. Period. Last year, everyone loved Guidry and hated Dawson. Guidry lost a bunch of NFL players in the secondary, Dawson shot TVD out of a slingshot to Madison and got Cam Ward, now Guidry sucks and Dawson has the #1 offense in the country.

You think Guidry got an off-season lobotomy and Dawson dug up Bill Walsh and picked his brain? They're the same ******* guys. They just have worse or better football players.

Mario Cristobal's calling card is acquiring talented football players. So, when we acquire them, and we lose a game, the thing to do is talk about what would happen if we didn't have them? Do we all realize how ******* pointless that is?

Canes fans im heartbroken but was this loss needed, so we can regroup and come out stronger?
Mario has this game happen every year dating back to Oregon. He's lost to an unranked team every single season he's been a head coach. It was bound to happen, even with Ward at QB (much like Herbert before him).

I get what you saying but I will say this. The fact they kept winning these close games despite all their fúck ups could cause players to just over look it and say well it don’t matter because we won and not actually fix the problem.

Now they got to sit down and realize that they almost blew the season both coaches and players. And having a bye week right after is good because you get extra time to work on things but you get to hear for 2 weeks about how much you suck. The wake game will tell you everything you need to know about this team

I hear you. It might turn out to be a “blessing”, for lack of a better word. I just don’t think you need to lose a game. You should have been woken up by the fact you’ve played with your food in almost every first half all season only to blow people away after halftime. Maybe this wakes them up to the fact it’s a lot more fun to play your best from the opening kick. We’ll see.

Because the other poster and I were specifically discussing the team goes as Cam goes and the potential record without Cam. Foundation is also brought up, where is that "foundation" of talent and development, if the season lives and dies with the play of 1 guy. That is why you keep hearing the discussions in multiple threads.

Lost all those guys. Did not replace those guys. Calling card out of minutes?

The defensive back recruiting has not been good enough. I’ve said that for 10 months. I think all of us have. It’s the reason all of us had pretty much the same concerns coming into the year. Mario and Guidry have failed there. I just think, in general, fans are way too reactionary to one Saturday. We’ve gone 80 yards in a drive about a million times this year. If we do it one more time on Saturday and win, everyone is jerking each other off all week again. But we don’t, so now let’s obliterate everyone and say we have no talent and we’re too reliant on our best player. That’s the reason he’s our best player.

I’m very interested to see how the team responds the next 2 weeks, and hopefully into a third. Go win the next 3 games and we can all take a collective breath and I think some of these conversations are a lot different. Some of it is valid, for sure. Especially about the secondary. But the team is absolutely better than it was in 2023, overall. I don’t care if that’s mostly due to one kid, that’s how the sport works. It’s MILES better than it was in 2022 when these guys got here. I never expected to compete for a national championship this year, but I did expect to win 10 (really 11) games and at the very minimum, watch them play in Charlotte. I think all of those things still happen. We can perform the autopsy after they do or do not.

Largely on the same page. Message board reactions and overreactions for sure. We lost because of the same reasons of the struggles during the comeback wins, so I think there is that frustration. Another point of frustration may be some seeing this as a one and done type roster/season and we just laid the predictable Miami/Mario egg.

Enjoy the ride.

I think that's kind of my point, too. I can somewhat understand the argument, because the team is really good because, mostly, of Cam. And he's gone. But I have always viewed this as a build. He has had 2 of "his" opportunities to improve the roster. The portal changes the timeline, for sure. But this was always going to be built, mainly, through HS recruiting. And he's had 2 classes. Those classes were 4th and 7th. That is at the very, very upper echelon in the sport. That's how you build a deep and talented roster. So, IMO, overall 1 to 85, the 2025 roster will be more talented than the 2024 roster. Which was more talented than the 2023 roster (again, top to bottom. The lack of DB depth/talent is clearly concerning and unacceptable). Better than 2022, etc.

I just don't see how you're convinced this is a "one and done" roster when you hired a man specifically for his HS recruiting prowess, and his two HS recruiting classes are true sophomores/redshirt freshmen, or true freshmen. And those classes were ranked 7th and 4th in the country.

I've never been a big fan of the "We needed to lose to refocus" theory. We all knew coming into this season that 1)This team is very unbalanced and 2) It was unlikely that this team would go undefeated, even with Cam being a generational talent.

That said, this team still has a chance to go 11-1 and play for an ACC Championship and a spot in the CFP. The D isn’t going to change, maybe the addition of Damari helps but he isn’t the second coming of Sean Taylor(Yes, I know Sean wasn’t a corner)

May be one and done due to the # of current starters/guys getting burn that could be done:

Roughly:

Portal:
- Cam
- Martinez
- Powell
- Mesidor
- Clark
- Kiko
- Porter
- Baron
- Barrow
- Alston
- Brown
- Hill
- Alderman
- Richard
- Carpenter
- Cook
- McCormick
- Campbell

Key Manny poisons gone/potentially gone:
- X
- Arroyo
- Rivers
- Borregales

Hill and Richard should be back, along with Harris -- all who the board actively looks to replace daily.

A rebuild within a rebuild?

If it leads to wholesale changes to our defensive approach then, yes, I guess we needed to lose a game. What we've witnessed from 50% of the team since USF is completely unacceptable. If the staph channels their disgust into a proactive plan where players are put in a position to succeed then we may view this loss to 5-4 GT a bit differently next month. If we come out aginst Wake with the same old gameplan and mis-placed personnel then it was all for not.
