Did Richt/Manny Understand…

Not sure about that. He did good at Penn state and duke on d this year and it’s not like his scheme and style doesn’t have a ton of tape to look at

Not a fan of his as our hc just to be clear
he wasnt at PSU long enough. Maybe he learned but I heard Franklin would get ****ed he didnt like to recruit hard. he had to be pushed.
Duke is a good job for him.

the key to a good defense at UM?

Simple and aggressive — a foolproof approach for players who can’t handle the mental side of the game. When Manny first got here, his defenses were lights out. Then, unfortunately, bad evaluations in recruiting caught up with him.

But is this where we need to go in the future? Do we need to bring in someone who keeps things vanilla and just lets the kids play fast and loose?

Was his system perfect? Absolutely not. But they were the best defenses I’ve seen UM field since the early 2000s.

The question is, who do you hire to replace Guidry that has a similar philosophical approach as Manny?
Yes

now we are deducted wins to fit the narratives? Mario is 22-16.
Well the point of the tweet was to highlight that Manny only had 36 games here to compare to Mario’s, but sure - let’s add Mario’s wins against Bethune Cookman and Southern Miss to really separate from the pack!

22-16 sure, go ahead and compare it now.

his defenses were lights out until gets exposed. he always starts off good his first year with other peoples players and falls off.
Also, Mike Rumph might have been the best defensive position coach (as far as coaching) we have had here since the Butch/Coker years.
Banda crap evaluations really fooled people into believing Mike was the problem and couldn't coach

You hire someone with a history of success at very different programs (i.e. varied conference, region, resources, etc).

For an example of this type of resume, see Mike Elko.

Hiring a coordinstor because of a "style," i.e. aggressive vs confervative, 4-3 vs 3-4, etc, is a mistake.

Get someone who knows how to adapt to personnel.
In 2022, we hired a ton of coaches with big time winning experience. Didn't work out at all...

Manny took over a team that had a defense full of kids he recruited. It wasn't a full rebuild and his went 8 wins and 7 wins his last two years. We just won 10 games. Let's revisit this next year.

and he doesn't like to recruit

Fortunately for him, in the NIL era recruiting is a lot less important. And from his hires at UM (T-Rob and T-Will) it looked like he was aware of his recruiting limitations and was attempting to bring in position coaches who were also excellent recruiters. T-Will left for a DC job but it was still a good hire. At DL he didn’t have the best recruiters but he had good technicians. Obviously the best idea is to have a coach who is good at both, but at least be good at one aspect of the job. Felt that the DL was competently coached.

Diaz is a better in-game decision maker than Cristobal and he is a competent coordinator. Pre-NIL I think Cristobal would be preferable over Diaz since high school recruiting was so important. Post NIL, I’d rather have a coach who has proven to be a good coordinator (which Diaz did from 2016-2018 at UM and PSU). Money solves a lot of the recruiting issues, which is the only clear advantage that Cristobal has over Diaz.

Downvote away. Long story short, If I knew how much NIL was going to change CFB, I’d rather have stuck with Diaz for 2-3 more years than hire Cristobal. We are going into year 4 and the roster is a mess.

Noodle on this - Cristobal in year 3 with a SOS ranked 59th won 10 games. Diaz in year 1 at Duke with a schedule ranked 68th won 9 games. And Cristobal makes twice as much as Diaz.

No, I said if I knew how NIL would change cfb, I would have retained him. Makes no sense to pay Cristobal’s buyout to hire Diaz, who at best is a marginal improvement.
They are the same. The true upgrades to program...I'm not sure those coaches would be interested or if Radakovich could lure them or if the Board of Trustees would go for it.

Manny was bad at evaluating but his scheme sucked too. It works when he first arrives bc teams haven't seen it yet and the roster hasn't developed bad habits. Every stop he's been at eventually got exposed.

I also think his scheme fosters a culture of freelancing, which leads to huge assignment lapses and big plays. It's more flash than substance....and these young impressionable kids will always prefer the flash to taking on a double and securing their gap assignment.
