the key to a good defense at UM?

Simple and aggressive — a foolproof approach for players who can’t handle the mental side of the game. When Manny first got here, his defenses were lights out. Then, unfortunately, bad evaluations in recruiting caught up with him.

But is this where we need to go in the future? Do we need to bring in someone who keeps things vanilla and just lets the kids play fast and loose?

Was his system perfect? Absolutely not. But they were the best defenses I’ve seen UM field since the early 2000s.

The question is, who do you hire to replace Guidry that has a similar philosophical approach as Manny?

his defenses were lights out until gets exposed. he always starts off good his first year with other peoples players and falls off.
Also, Mike Rumph might have been the best defensive position coach (as far as coaching) we have had here since the Butch/Coker years.

Right, so the scheme worked for the most part when we had the players to run it — smart safeties and beasts along the DL (see Willis).

Our players are ******* stupid and it’s pretty clear that we can’t run anything remotely complicated or we’re screwed.

You hire someone with a history of success at very different programs (i.e. varied conference, region, resources, etc).

For an example of this type of resume, see Mike Elko.

Hiring a coordinstor because of a "style," i.e. aggressive vs confervative, 4-3 vs 3-4, etc, is a mistake.

Get someone who knows how to adapt to personnel.

"Simple and aggressive"

I think you are forgetting the most important part of that equation...fundamentally sound.
Simple and aggressive AND fundamentally sound.
We are not fundamentally sound.
For example with our DL...we run around looking for an open path to the QB (something some people here cheer on) but not enough focus on taking on a block and beating that block not running around it. Not **** but somebody has to do the dirty work.

Diaz defense would have been a good complement to our offense. Big emphasis on negative plays and turnovers. Yes, it gives up explosive plays, but when you have an offense scoring 45 ppg, you can live with that since chances are good the defense will also get the offense extra possessions.

I mean I’m just looking at the stats. Our teams in 2017 and 2018 were especially dominant.
So dominant as long it was against ****** teams with less talent. Any team with average or better talent and a decent OC dIAZ would get raped.
