Diaz updates injuries, talks team going into Pitt

Ever watched a Bill Belichick interview? Whats the problem with being short lipped? Why does he have to make long answers on how the players were upset and how they wanted to run penalty laps?

Is there an obligation for interviews? Yes. Is there an obligation to make long pointless answers with no content whatsoever? Nope.
Actually when bill does his weekly interviews he isn’t as short liped as he’s made out to be. Especially when the questions are good..post game pressers are a different story tho. 😂

Just win. Be the silent type and win. None of this analysis ****. Learn from your QB, dammit!

Yup. Manny just does what the overwhelming majority of coaches do at press conferences, which is try to give away as little as possible while making a passable attempt at answering the questions without coming off as a d!ck. And it's what he is contractually obligated to do.

Getting mad about how a coach responds to questions during a press conference is missing the forest for the trees.

Brevin is easily the most talented dude on offense but his inability to stay healthy on the field is gonna hurt him come draft time
I don't think he's 'easily' more talented than Mallory, Chaney or Knighton.

I've not seen enough of the young WRs to say.

McCloud had one total tackle in the Clemson game and was getting put on his *** and outrun pretty regularly. Combine with his previous sub-par performances, it would be a travesty if the rest of the linebacker core didn't get significant playing time over him against Pitt
He's going to lose the locker room

Agree. When reporters actually ask Xs and Os type questions to Belichick, he probably gives the best and most detailed answers of any coach I’ve ever heard. He actually seems giddy to discuss them. Now when the reporters start asking hypotheticals and other stupid questions, you know what you’re going to get.

We've all watched Bill Belichick interviews and every single one of us has said, "Jesus, what an *******." He's allowed to do it because he's the best coach of all-time. Manny is not. You can't play like Miami and act like Bill Belichick. And there's a reason why Belichick is the only one who does that. Even Saban, for all his snark and getting ****ed, still gives very verbose answers.

I'll just never understand caring about a press conference. I genuinely don't think I've read or heard a single word Manny has said this year except for what's discussed about injuries. Literally no one cares about anything else. It's all lip service from every single person in his same position. I know I'm weird, but I'm much more concerned about how the football team plays and whether it wins or loses than what a coach says to the media.

I agree 100%. The main things I listen to with Manny are injury reports or actual announcements/news. The other stuff is coachspeak, which virtually 100% of the coaches, whether college or pro, engage in. They normally don’t reveal much, just spin, and the only thing that counts is how the team performs on Saturday. That communicates how effective he is - not him, or any coach for that matter, flapping his gums.

Good observation on Belichick versus Manny as well, and while can act the way he does, and the other can’t.

I think the biggest problem from practice to gameday is how the CB/WR's prepare during the week. IF the CB are playing that sissy NoD coverage in practice then that would explained the WR's looking good during the week to only fail when facing gameday Press Man coverage

Exactly! When they ask questions that are not in detail that’s when u get the “we’re on to Cincinnati” type response

Saban, Day, Meyers, Belichick...most of your coaches who win, don’t say too much. I mean, Dabo cut right to the chase on the botched kick that went back for 7, by simply saying that was on me, no need to blame anyone but me.

I feel Diaz is still too busy trying to sell, which is a horrible sign. This little gem had me shook:

“Have to watch film from today and see who is doing best, who gives us the best chance to win.”

What does this even mean? Why are you looking at practice film to see who gives us the best chance? Are we not looking at game film, and being invested in the practice coaching these kids up?

Like this kinda talk, this talking in circles w/o a destination still makes me leery.

Why not just say; “We’re still looking over film from our last game to see where we can tighten up, and we’ve used our practices to tighten up those areas.”

Or if asked about lineup changes, why not just say “Nothing is off the table. Our players and our staff know the standard, and that’s all being handled internally.”

Simple chit. But Diaz is still politicking & that’s an eyebrow raiser. Hopefully come Saturday, we see our boys just do them & this is just Diaz’s m.o vs. a repeat of last season.

Following Wednesday’s practice, Miami Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz gave an injury update going into this week’s matchup vs. Pitt, including discussing the status of TE Brevin Jordan, who left the Clemson game with a shoulder injury.

“The only guy that would be questionable (for Pitt) is Brevin,” Diaz said. “Everyone else has been practicing, good to go. We’ll see as the week goes on with Brevin… I think we know we have two really outstanding tight ends. Will (Mallory) has really made some big improvements this year in terms of his physicality, blocking, doing things the tight end position requires. His ability to spread out, his body size across the middle of the field for a quarterback, it gives the quarterback such confidence because he’s such a humongous target to throw the ball to.”

OL Navaughn Donaldson has sat out the first four games of the season thus far as he works his way back from a knee injury, but Diaz has left open the possibility he could return at some point this season.

“Navaughn has an appointment later this week to assess his progress and where he’s at,” Diaz said. “There are two things going on, his overall fitness trying to get that right, and getting the clearance on the actual injury itself. Those go hand in hand, we’ll hear more on that later on this week. Right now, he’s able to take reps in no contact, walkthrough, jog-through type settings. We’re still hoping to have him, but I couldn’t say one thing for sure.”

Heading into the game against the Panthers this weekend, does Diaz anticipate any lineup changes?

“I think there may be snap counts (changed), but I don’t think anything dramatic,” Diaz said. “Sometimes you have to get into a game (to figure that out). Get in a game, see who the minutes go to at some spots. But no, we’re still battling. Have to watch film from today and see who is doing best, who gives us the best chance to win.”

QB D’Eriq King told the media earlier on Wednesday that Miami just put together their best back-to-back practices all year, a sentiment Diaz was less hesitant to declare.

“I’d have to watch the film to know, I’m on the defensive side, not watching the offensive practice,” Diaz said. “I do think we’ve got great leadership, the guys are helping push through. We did some discipline running for our penalties this past weekend, had to repeat a couple. Normally guys get discouraged, it was the opposite - guys were excited to put their hands on the line and run again. I do think it’s encouraging that we do have a good bit of leadership on this team.”

Much of that leadership has stemmed from King, who also mentioned the team has been open and honest with each other this week on what they need to improve going forward.

“Obviously D’Eriq has such a quiet confidence about him, is never rattled,” Diaz said. “When he wasn’t playing well in the game (at Clemson), there was never a sense of panic on his face. Internally, as a staff and football team, we were all able to put our hands up and say `These are places we could have been a lot better.’ And to be able to own it, move on, you have to tell some harsh truths after a game like that. Once you own them, have leaders being accountable, it’s encouraging.”

Pitt QB Kenny Pickett, who leads the nation in passing yardage, is dealing with an ankle injury suffered last week, but Diaz said the team is preparing as though he will play this weekend; Pickett defeated UM as a true freshman back in the 2017 season finale.

“His toughness has never been in question,” Diaz said of Pickett. “We would expect him to play, certainly he has burned us on some long runs in the past. He’s got a cannon for an arm, can throw some real darts down the field. If he finished the game last week we’d expect him to play us this week.”

Speaking on if LB Avery Huff could earn more snaps with the struggles at LB, Diaz said he still wants to see more from the sophomore before giving him significant playing time.

“Avery has to learn - not having spring practice, those reps. We were short 4-5 practices in training camp,” Diaz said. “Those are reps Avery Huff needed because this is going to be his big developing year. He’s still developing, doing a nice job on special teams. But understanding the assignments, run fits - he’s learning on that and gaining more confidence in that.

“What we want in Avery, Tirek Austin-Cave, Sam Brooks, Corey Flagg - we’re super excited about what we have developing in that linebacker room.”
When you have Corey Flagg getting reps over Huff...that really tells you about football IQ. Not that Huff doesn't have it, but more on high IQ Flagg must be that he understands the defensive scheme and is trusted as a true freshman with no Spring ball under his belt to get snaps in games on the defense.

See what you're getting at here but really don't put much into coach speak. I think across coaching, speaking to the media is the thing they care about as little as humanly possible. All they're trying to do is get asked less questions.

“I’m on the defensive side, not watching the offensive practice”

oh man, i do not like how that sounds

why? That means he trust Lashlee and is focused on the side of the ball he is an expert on. Saban would probably say the same thing if you asked him about Bama practice.

He has a D coordinator in Baker who has been running his system since 2015 and a co D in Banda and Diaz still feels he has to totally dedicate his time to that side of the ball after the offensive performance we had on Saturday? I trust lashlee, but I’d prefer if my HC is overseeing the whole operation and doesn’t answer more or less that he doesn’t know how the offense performed during the week in practice. I’m a Diaz guy, but that’s a bad look
