Diamond Classic (Tourney Talk)

Any word on Reggie playing tonight? If we can pull this one off, we are on everyone's radar.

No idea, but someone I know who is with the team said his finger was heavily wrapped last night. Haven't spoken to him today.

Edit to add (from the Herald):

Larranaga said he doesn't expect Johnson back the rest of the tournament. Also, McKinney Jones spent Friday in the hospital with a 105-degree fever

We did play one of our best games last year without Reggie (FSU) but this sucks big time. Hopefully our guards ball out and we pull the upset, but I would not be upset if we took 3rd place here.

Indiana State v. Miami (December 25th at 7:30PM on ESPN 2)

At least we're not playing 3 games in 2 days

IMO, no more Hawaii tournaments due to the length of travel. Find one closer to home.

So I guess no Alaska tourney either? We've played in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands a couple of times, those work better. We did go out to Vegas a couple of years ago, but in true Haith fashion, we played 3 girls JV high school teams.

We absolutely must beat Indiana State on Tuesday.

To me it doesn't make sense to go to Hawaii or Alaska, we should play in the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic.

The selection committee won't forget that we traveled to Hawaii and pretty much knew we were going to get Arizona for our trouble. Win or lose that game to Zona, playing tournaments like these are good for the program in my opinion.

Not if we're going to play FAU. We should go back to the days of playing Indiana, UNLV, Ohio State, Florida, Tennessee, etc.

I am all for playing those team in NORMAL out of conference games but having some of those teams in a tourney doesn't guaranty you will play any of them. If you schedule those teams NORMALLY you guaranty you play them.

I don't want to play FAU either but I don't think we should travel that far at the same time for a three day tournament.

Side note, did you see who is playing in the OB Classic this year?

- UF
- FSU
- Tulsa
- Air Force

Rmember, the OB Classic is not (or was not) a tournament. It was a 1 game thing for us, so we were guaranteed to play Ohio St or UNC or Indiana, etc. If it becomes a real tournament, you set it up so you have Miami and another major program, like Indiana, and have each play a mid major like Valpo or Indiana State or Winthrop, with the expectation that Miami would play the other major team in the "final" but if not, you still play 2 decent teams.

I understand, just don't think it is that great to travel.

I think it's fine. Not ideal, but not too big a deal.

Travel in general...okay. But this tourney was probably more bad timing and poor luck

1. Opened with the HOME HOME HOME team Hawaii at 1:05AM (12/23),

2. Played the SAME DAY at 11:30AM 12/23 and 24), and

3. Will play Christmas for the 3rd game in 3 days.

I think we can find a lot better tourney somewhere else IMO.

Not overly excited about this tourney but we played at 1 AM eastern and then 1130 PM the next day. That is almost 20 hours in between games. Plus, its Hawaii in December which I am sure the kids love.
