Dennis Erickson decides to retire

Dennis Erickson a great person? Lol bolting right after getting us on probation.

I liked him a lot as coach but did not like him as a person.

Yeah I'd be down with having him join in a nice support staff role with his only responsibility being "Shake hands and kiss babies (of boosters and alums)." I feel like he could pull in some serious nostalgia based donations.

I loved Dennis and I can remember after he beat FSU in 1995how drained head after the game because he put so much into it

Dennis Erickson's offense with Jimmy Johnson's defense would have been a beautiful thing!

Pretty much was, told him to coach the offense and leave the defense alone.

Not entirely true. He already had adopted the attacking 4-3 with some variations. Sonny Lubick added some wrinkles. I remember we would sometimes go into the Bears 46 which was kind of hot in the late '80's after the great run by Chicago.

Just as Sam Jankovich asked JJ if he could continue the Schnellenberger pro passing attack when he took over--and which he agreed to do--I'm sure that Sam was probably looking to bring in someone who would not change our very successful defensive philosophy. Sam was very familiar with Dennis because i believe that Sam had been AD at WSU at one point. I don't know if there paths crossed or overlapped where they were both on the same staffs at the same time but both were products of the pretty good coaching that had emerged in that part of the country, even if they had not been known for the greatest teams. Dennis had some experience under Jack Elway at some point, I think. He was considered a pretty good theoretician of the pro passing attack.

We didn't have an internet or message boards when Dennis was at UM, but I remember a lot of antipathy toward him from hardcore Miami fans. When we first started having message boards in the mid-90's I think there was a lot of negativity. of course, we've been through so much worse in the 2000's that people look back nostalgically at Dennis.

The man was the definition of a functioning alcoholic. Loved his offense and cheesy caps.

Jimmy's offense was just fine. Actually, better once Dennis was working with his own recruits.

1984: 30.9
1985: 33.8
1986: 35.8
1987: 34.4
1988: 34.8

-------------

1989: 35.5
1990: 37.3
1991: 32.2
1992: 30.8
1993: 27.5
1994: 30.4

I liked Dennis he had a lot of pressure on him after Jimmy and still usually delivered. Perhaps if he didn't start hitting the bottle at 6 am during the film sessions may have won a few more? Coaches list:

Howard/Jimmy
Butch
Dennis
Larry
Randy

Folden

Not putting Rick on the list way too early. Remember when The U supposedly offered Wanny millions to leave The Fins? Man that would have been something. Something awful!

Really was a great offensive mind. Was definitely ahead of his time. Those teams were a lot of fun to watch.

Butch should actually be #1 on the list. Actually he should be #1 on the list all time best coaches ever, ahead of even Saban and Rockne.

Because his 0 NCs and one season of 10 or more wins are just so awesome.

In the sprint to winning programs, Howard had to start fifteen yards behind the starting line.

JJ got to start ten yards PAST the starting line.

Erickson likewise got to start ten yards past the starting line.

Butch started at the starting line, but had to run ten yards, stop, run five yards backwards, and THEN run his race.

Howard and Butch weren't handed top programs.

Howard started from scratch, and Butch had a reset with 31 scholarship losses.
