If we play half this good on defense throughout conference play we're helicopter ****ing our way to Charlotte. Unbelievable turnaround.

Young players improving mentally and physically. UTough making us stronger at the point of attack. A healthy Curtis Porter. And D'Onofrio playing more aggressively and trusting his experienced secondary, I suppose. The unit has made a huge leap. Playing Hurricanes defense once again and I'm ******* loving it.

For as much as I agree with you I really want to see us against better comp week in week out. I mean, I am watching the top teams and thinking "****, we can totally play with these teams!" But then I remember we have only played one legit team. Its easy to get up for one game. Can we bring it every week? We obviously have some lingering injuries with SM and Duke. I hope those boys can get healthy cause there arent any more long breaks and there arent any more games where they will only be able to play a half.

However, you are so right to this point. I also watch this defense in awe at times. Guys stepping up left and right and making plays.
What is great is guys like TA and TC are making plays doing the same thing they were trying to do with them last year. They just weren't ready yet. Now with the added strength, second yr being backers, they look legit. TA is starting to make me think he could eventually play on the next level. Dude is getting it done!

I think Armbrister has 6-7 TFL's already this season. He's been very active in the opponents backfield.

For anyone harboring championship hopes, these are the numbers to key on:

Scoring defense: 11 of the last 14 NCs have finished in the top 10. You pretty much need to finish in the top 10 here and average <17 ppg

Total defense: Probably not quite as important as scoring D, but nonetheless 11 of the last 14 also finished in the top 10

Pass efficiency defense: More important than either run D or pass D. Need to be in the top 10 and allowing under 104 rat or so.

Our run defense does need to improve some to be in 'safe' territory. Need to aim for top 25 there.

We look so much better than last season it incredible. So that is all I can really ask for.

Of course we can get better though. Still giving up big chunks of yardage here and there but hopefully we can clean that up soon.

We showed against the Gators that we can stop the run if we really commit to it. Hopefully that is the case when the ACC season starts up.

Ya, I think we can be better than we showed against USF at least. Our rank there will probably take a hit this coming week because we play GT and its based on yards allowed rather than YPC, but for the remainder of the season we face teams that either aren't very committed to running the ball and/or not very good at it. I would expect that rank to go up in the second half of the season.

This can't be true because Wildcat and a few of the village idiots on here said Dorito sucks and South FL talent can't run a hybrid 3-4 defense. In fact, we heard **** for 8 months out of these clowns. Wait... where did all those clowns go? Told them Coach D was going to make them look stupid very soon. History has a funny way of repeating itself especially within the Cane community.

Coach D has proven he is a master at shutting down the triple option. GT is about to get smacked in GD mouth.

This has to be the biggest 1 year improvement on defense definitely in my life time.... D'onofrio is making a case for being one of the best DC's in the nation.

Top 10 is ridiculous.... and it would be much higher then that if Al Golden wasnt about showing mercy on teams so much and pulling starters out.

One play that really impressed me yesterday was when USF tried to throw a WR screen and our guys immediately recognized and and blew it up for a loss.

But coach D and Golden don't know how to run a defense??? how can this be so you dopes.

When temple had a top 20 defense you fools should have all seen this coming.

The best part is this defense has a lot of room to get even better in the next few years with how we are recruiting.

4canes, my favorite play of the game was after USF had lost all hope. They reached into their "offensive bag of plays", and pulled out an option play to their right side. We played it perfectly, and hit that **** in the backfield for a 2 yrd. loss.
GT, ur up!

What was most impressive about this defense against USF imo was the immediate adjustment they made after Shaw broke that 75 yard run, which ended up in a TD, on their 1st drive.

USF went w/ an unbalanced line which allowed their RB to break loose on the outside, but after that drive, the defense made the necessary adjustments which kept Shaw from breaking loose again.

He ended up w/ 119 yards rushing but 75 was on 1 play..... 44 yards the rest of the game.

I wonder if donofrio wanted to be on the field last year because he had so little options and wanted to be more hands on as a result, maybe he just didn't feel comfortable enough with the players to go to the booth??

Was he in the booth at temple after he got his guys in there??

this year he clearly trusts his team more it seems to my untrained eyes in regards to knowing what to expect with his players being in the system longer and improved depth...

I know when Tracy Howard mentioned he was ****ed about people talking smack on coach D it seemed all the hype and drama last year was over and done and it was time to get **** right....

Great point, you watch that run and no one on D moves when the line goes unbalanced, next series they do it and the whole defense shifts.
I'm lovin' this d-line too, getting nice push, disrupting things.
