Day 2: Captains Practice

Next two pitchers
Freshman LHP: Michael Fernandez. He looked really good, he has some command issues but he has the stuff to be a contributor. He was sitting 92-93 and show three pitches. He will have his freshman hiccups but he is a very nice piece to have to develop. He finished with 4K's no Hits 1 Walk (He faced mostly Freshman)
Welcome to the Michael Fernandez fan club. I think he's in conversation to be the best pitcher on the team by the end of the year. He needs some experience and live action. I've been posting about him since May when I saw him pitch live.

Steal of the class

Could be a weekend starter as a freshman with that change up if the velocity is accurate. Excellent mechanics and pitchability.

Besides Collera.. I think Michael Fernandez may have the most ready to pitch at the college level stuff of any arm we signed the 2024 class. DeRias has all the tools but I need to see them put together. If Fernandez was 6'2 he's probably signing for about $5M right now.

I was looking forward to see what player we would adopt to the fan club. I'll just wait to see who is undeniably talented and kept out of the starting lineup by JD.

Big Coastal Car
Others pitching notes
- Reese Lumpkin was sitting between 92-94MPH, He showed he can be serviceable in the bullpen

- Carson Fischer: All fall he was sitting between 89-90MPH, the first pitch he threw today was 94MPH, he was sitting between 93-94MPH, which is about a 4MPH increase in two months, pretty crazy. He showed he can be serviceable in the bullpen

- Jake Dorn: Sitting between 89-90MPH, I don't know how much we can count on him truly.

Right now we have: Walters, Robert, Rob Evans, Fischer, Lumpkin, Cleveland as guys I think we can count on in this bullpen/rotation. I think we will find out after more practices if other guys make their way into that list. I think a guy like AJ Ciscar can provide something for 1-2 innings max out of the bullpen, 1 inning would be preferred. Fernandez and De Rias need to continue to get better but i like their potential.

Last thing on pitcher: I also think we need to give our recruiting coordinator Jonathan Anderson some credit for getting us some freshman arms that have Velocity and players we can develop into future key contributors. Can they make an impact this season (Yes)
Where is Will Smith in all of this. Big CCU fan now a Hurricane, just curious. I haven't seen anything about him in a while.

Prep baseball posted about two minute clip of him last year and I sent it in my canes baseball chat and one of the people in the chat agreed with you that he could be something. They really liked his slider

I saw him in a game where he had 19 K's and probably 10-12 were on a change-up and the other 7-9 were set-up with a change up.

It may have just been the day but it honestly looked like it was on a string and he was just pulling it back before it got right over the plate.

Sitting 89-90 and yes the slider was also nice. He was using it a lot to get ahead in the count too. Excellent pitchability.

D1 has him as our best freshman pitcher, which means the coaches told them that.

Only one listed though, unfortunately.

If I'm recruiting in college, I absolutely focus on changeup kids; especially from the left side. Those guys will get huge K numbers because of the gorilla approach to today's game.

Grab several, one or two will pop in velocity gains, recycle the others (as bad as that sounds, it's a reality).

But you're spot on that competitive kids with a great changeup, athleticism, ability to spin, combined with a lack of physicality is a great genre to target because you can get them to campus and they tend to outperform their prospect status.

Exactly why I like him as much as I do. It’s even rare to see many college programs develop a change-up. Either you have it or you don’t until you get into affiliated ball most of the time.

Palmquist is the only recent P I can recall who developed a pretty good one in the offseason, before becoming a starter. And it had to help his draft status.
