David Reese 2018 S/LB as a Miami Recruit

I'm all for blaming Randy but wasn't Ramon Buchanan's career mostly derailed by injuries?

When he was on the field he looked lost. I remember being 100% confident that any play action would freeze him in place essentially for the rest of the play. If you wanted a 100% success rate and you were playing us, just fake a handoff and send a TE or WR 10-12 yards deep into Ramon's zone.

For you long timers, this kid's physical makeup and ability reminds me of Michael smith back in the 90s. 6-3, 220 pound kid who was a tremendous athlete at LB. Sadly his career got derailed by a horrific knee injury.

He reminds me of Ramon Buchanan coming out of HS, Reese a little bigger at the same stage right now though. Randy never developed Ramon here but this kid has that same upside and yes he is Dugans nephew.

Big brother plays for Miss. St.

Buchanan just wasn't a very good football player. He was fast in gym shorts but didn't play fast and lacked instincts.

Talking HS Buchanan. As a prospect coming out.

Not injury prone and not developed at Miami tenure.

Look at Reese's film... Nowhere close to as impressive as his physical traits

Are you sure you're watching the right one? Most up to date? This same thing happened with Lorenzo Lingard on this same board originally, when I and few others praised him and it ended up that people were watching the wrong film. The perception changed immediately.

This is his junior film.

Junior Season - David Reese highlights - Hudl

I see a fast, rangy OLB who can drop back and cover. Possesses length and his measurables at his size are far from common especially at LB at this stage.

Not every linebacker you come across either is going to lay jaw dropping hits across the whole film. Different types of LBs.

He has speed and explosiveness, but it looks like he lacks the hitting/tackling technique you would want in a LB/S. Most of those sacks/tackles could be broken by a large QB. I would pass based on the videos I have seen.

I'm all for blaming Shannon. But Buchanan was a **** player. He was a workout warrior who just couldn't play.

hitting/tackling can easily be fixed with right coaching.

This. Good coaching should fix the tackling high problem. But you take that range and size all day. Geo is correct. jr film looks way better than the camps & previous film.

I thought the same thing at first, but then I kept thinking about it. He had several opportunities to lay a soul crushing hit. Instead he chooses to throw them down with his hands. He was unimpeded to the QB on his blindside and decided to take it easy on him. Yes, tackling is coachable, but being a savage is not.

That's coaching. Look at All-American LB and projected first round pick Zach Cunningham's tape. He still doesn't tackle well or pop people, but he's all over the **** field.
