The NFL isn't a guarantee. Hard to turn down $100k when you come from nothing.Exactly. It's a culmination of things though that lead to these bad choices. Usually a kid living in the moment and wanting what is in front of his face at the time, weak or poor advice coming from those around the kid and an irrational view of the kid's talent being so strong that it'll get him to the NFL and paid no matter what choices he makes now.
Add any current financial limitations the kid or his family might have and especially if the kid already has a kid then the bag game becomes pretty much impossible to compete with.
As you stated, all this can obviously dramatically mess with the kid's lifetime earning potential and is beyond shortsighted in many instances.
