Danyell Ferguson

My memory of Ferguson is from a 35-24 win over Syracuse in the last game of Butch’s first season. The Canes were down 24-14 halftime. The probation punishment been announced earlier in the week. Miami would not be going to a bowl game. The team came back and won. Ferguson ran for 163 and over the 1,000 yard mark. Ryan Clement was the quarterback. Jammi German and Yatil Green at WR. Tremain Mack a playmaker at Safety and on special teams.

The Canes began the season 1-3, then won 7 straight to finish 8-3, ranked 20th, and Big East co-Champ with VT (one of the 3 early losses).

Are you sure they announced the bowl ban before this game? I was only 16, so I could be remembering wrong, but I thought I remembered fans throwing oranges onto the field at the end of the game because we thought we were going to play ND in the OB.

I was very close to Danyell. Loved him.

I could be wrong. I thought the sanctions were announced right before the end of the season..

That was a chilly night at the OB

I remember the TV talking heads comparing him to Thurman Thomas as an NFL comp before he suffered that career-ending hip injury.

I don’t know how his NFL career went or if he’s in the area , he played quietly with a passion.

So happy OP brought him up , I hope he’s living well, he would be a tremendous catch for any young lady to have probably a bunch of kids .

Great post about a very good young man he was and no doubt still is.

If I remember I think he signed with the Bears. Not sure if he made the opening day roster.

Jammi German, Yatil Green, and Tremain Mack. Three of my favorite Canes of all time along with Danyell Ferguson. I was raised a Canes fan, so remember a little bit about the 80s teams, but the probation era coincided with middle and high school for me and built up to being a freshman at UM in '01. What a great ride as a fan.

Side note, I qb'd our fraternity squad to a victory over a Ryan Clement led law school intramural team. Perhaps the peak of my athletic career and maybe the trough of his.

Excellent story. I certainly can’t make that claim.
