My best memory of Art was at a Hurricane Club meeting in Fort Lauderdale the day before playing FSU in the 90's. Art did his speech and he brought a FSU Spear made out of 2” bamboo that someone stuck on UM's field during the night. I was like 5 feet away from him at a table when he smashed the spear violently over his forehead. Then Art looked up with a dazed look with his eyes rolling back. Art had a streak of crimson blood coming down. The spear bent but didn't break so Art really smashed it over his forehead again and then staggered a step from the blow. Then Art finally broke the spear over is knee. The look on his face just set the whole club off laughing. When to Dennis Erickson's radio show in Miami the next week and talked to Erickson and he said when he found out about Art's stunt he couldn't stop laughing.
Never liked him and I always will (as a coach). As a person he is pretty good peeps. But I don't want good peeps, I want great coaches and he never was nor never will be.
